         The professional world today offers innumerable challenges. It coul
d be in production, market demand position, infrastructure, quality assurance, or it could be an obscure lobby operating against your interests.  Information, skill-sets, expertise and the right experiences - all these count in grabbing these challenges by their horns.

Right now, there are so many business deals being conducted on uneven playgrounds, with the result that the smaller fish end up inside the bigger fish. Wouldn’t an even playground be an ideal arrangement in the socio-commercial scenario? Wouldn’t you want to be just as good as the next of them? Or even better? You know you can do that. In this information era, it is not too difficult. You just need to know how, and make up your mind suitably.

How could we face our competitors squarely? And face up to them with confidence? How do you get them to respect you more? How would we render the playground more level? Simple! By turning ourselves into professionals of course!!

The following is a study on the inadequacy of human element in guiding business deals to their advantage. This study has been conducted in  Bangladesh,  India, Pakistan, Srilanka and the Maldives in South Asia,  the Philippines, Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam in South East Asia,  Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, UAE  and Sharjah in the Middle East and  Kenya, Mozambique, Sudan, Nigeria, Liberia and Ghana  of Africa and can be applied to other homogeneous regions.

The findings of the study have been presented here objectively, for information and use, and no offence has been meant towards any community or race. The readers are requested to consider these findings objectively and with a postive mindset and make the best use of them.

The results of the study are as follows:

1. The subjects in this study have been observed to be generally rather peaceful, passive and even affectionate in their outlook. They seem to be more philosophical and forgiving, less reactive. They are content to be domesticated, obedient and dependent on the family and community. They also like to follow traditions and religious rituals more readily. They are neither too probing, too inquisitive or too pushy, but are happy to trust their elders and peers. This makes them relatively peaceful and quiet, and more easy to get along with.

2. The subjects being not to inquisitive or information-seeking, makes them a bit slow – slow in thinking and analyzing, slow in decision making and slow in action. Inversely, this attitude renders them confused and rather helpless and fatalistic in unfamiliar and unexpected settings. This is especially so due to lack of exposure and information.

3. In the face of lack of information and exposure, the conduct of the subjects is seen to be wanting , in both formal and informal settings. They seem to be at a loss while working in an office, show room, in marketing, or even in life-saving emergencies. Lack of professional and social discipline seems to make them self conscious.This unpreparedness makes others look down upon the subjects , making the subjects feel inferior and uncomfortable. The idea of being treated like an untouchable is not very relishable.

4. Professional competence and expertise would depend on the choices made by the subjects in pursuing their careers, and the quality and extent of the training programs. This therefore becomes a subjective matter to be considered by each individual at his/her own choice. How they excel in their own professional fields would depend on how much they apply themselves to the full gamut of the study.

5. Social discipline is more general in nature and applicable to all of us. So lets analyze the social inadequacies and their solutions one by one.

General

  1. More than 96% of the respondents confessed to laboring under mystical faiths and weird practices that they could not explain to themselves. In their lack of confidence in their own skills, they appear to seek shelter in mystical influences, and follow strange rituals to appease their gods, angels and undefined extra-temporal forces. This seems to make them feel (subjectively) accomplished in their efforts, with the belief that they have covered all grounds in their efforts. Solution: - To be successful in any business, you should occupy a commanding position at the growth stage, and ride the crest of novelty. A knowledgeable entrepreneur would want to
    assess introduction, growth, maturity and decline stages of a business, and move in to secure his position at the growth stage. He would confine all his considerations to scientific reasoning  and watch the market trends through surveys and research. He would eliminate all mystical influences and unscientific forces from his business plans.
  2. The subjects are generally found to be self-conscious and stiff, reluctant with proper introductions; they talk more about their educational qualifications, rather than their achievements. It is like the qualifications that they have paid for describes everything ab
    out their personality. Solution: - Imbibe qualities that make you equal to others, and be graceful and courteous. Say ‘hi’, make small talk, be friendly, talk about health, weather, about business; don’t be too probing, don’t be forcing too much information on your companion. Do not say things to put off your companion, including a discourse on your educational qualifications or your wealth. Do not ever boast.
  3. 84% of the respondents have confessed to mistreating their inferiors, subordinates, ladies and kids, yelling at them in frustration, resorting to word abuse and in many cases even physical abuse. This is a display of their desperation and intolerance. And this does not help their professional career at all. Adequate planning, leading, organizing, regulating, directing and coordinating their business enterprise are important to make a success of it. Control and feedback are just as important too. Solution: - Implement various management strategies, including incentives, motivational techniques and negative and positive reinforcements and monitor objective feedbacks. There are no subordinates or inferiors in business. They play their roles the same way you do. Treat them as partners and treat them well.
  4. Many subjects have confessed to pinching trinkets that catches their eye. A large number of them have admitted they resorted to fibbing to others to make them look larger, wealthier and
  5. more successful than they are. Lying to save their interests, projecting a false picture about quality, utility, durability and money’s worth of their products or services have also been confessed to by more than 81% of the respondents. Obviously they were looking for mmediate profits, rather than long-term profitability. Solution: -Pinching or stealing shows a want of character. Buy what you want, if you can afford it, or borrow it for a short period, until the urge wanes. Stealing only makes you feel bad about it, in the end. You end up losing your credibility, too. Long-term profitability is far more important to your enterprise, compared to what you earn in the immediate now. When your potential customers ask for some service, do not ever say ‘No problem’. This is the most flaunted, most damaging and the most meaningless assurance you can ever give. Handle quality products or services, charge reasonably and build up a long list of loyal customers. Present the same quality of your products/services at marketing, sales and after sales stages. This will secure your future in the business, not fibbing.
  6. Subjects in many locations are in the habit of spitting and throwing cigarette butts at public places. Many subjects have confessed to urinating at public places, too. Solution: - Spit only in washbasins, nowhere else. Use toilets to urinate and nowhere else. Wash your hands after using toilets. Cigarette smoking is very injurious to your health. Try to stop the habit on a good day with a resolve not to touch it again for sometime. You will lose the urge in a week’s time. Cigarette butts and match sticks maybe disposed of only in ashtrays or bins meant for that.
  7. A minor percentage of subjects have also confessed to even defecating at locations other than in regular toilets. 96% of them were in no way involved in keeping their toilets clean. Solution: - Use toilets invariably. Have a toilet constructed to suit your needs. Toilet should be kept very clean and disinfected regularly.
  8. Around 58% of the respondents admitted to having a shower once a day, while 33% confessed to having a bath once in two days or less. Only 3% of them claimed to have a shower twice a day. Solution: - Bathe twice a day, once in the morning and once before you settle down for the night. Bathroom is an integral part of your household, so keep it very clean and comfortable. It will be a worthwhile investment.
  9. 73% of them admitted to brushing their teeth once a day, while 22% claimed to brush their teeth twice a day. 8% of the subjects were not sure if they brushed their teeth everyday. Solution: - Brush your teeth twice a day, once before breakfast and before settling down for the night.
  10. A whopping 88% of the respondents admitted to not changing their inner garments every day. 57% of them change their under garments once in 3 days. Solution: - Change your undergarments once a day, immediately after your morning bath. This will keep you clean enough.Wear bright colorful dresses, to brighten up your surroundings.
  11. 92% of them admitted to littering at public places, throwing garbage at public locations.  Solution:- Collect all garbage regularly in plastic bags and dispose of them in the designated bins. Do not throw any garbage anywhere any time, other than into the designated bins.
  12. 68% of the respondents disclosed that school kids in their countries are not being trained on water conservation, afforestration, personal habits and health care, or about the drastic and long term effects of air, water and pollution. Solution:- Subjects involving practical aspects of their future lives should be integrated in their syllabus and practical training imparted on a regular basis.
  13. All these techniques originate from an objective study, and can be integrated into a professional profile through a personal resolve. The aspirants would need to respond only to scientific analysis and objective reasoning and choose the best course for themselves, eliminating all negative characteristics.
  14. The aspirants would also do themselves justice by learning music, dancing, eating and dressing in style and associate with art, theaters and community recreations.
  15. Incidentally, some one commented that while using an online medium like yahoo chat rooms to promote their businesses, many respondents kept insisting on asl, and kept prompting for responses through buzzing. Many of them resorted to typing in large fonts and spamming too. All this is considered improper. Solution: - Ideally, you would want to talk about your business in the chat room, in detail, wherever called for. And respond to invitations to pm interested persons. Buzzing and demanding asl are considered extremely indecent. So is spamming the room with repetitive typing of the same message and in large fonts.

It is very relevant to read what my friend Eve from Ohio, USA told me so casually, recently. “The world is full of stress, and it is because they don't know how to lay it down. They are worried about tomorrow; yesterday is gone, tomorrow never comes and we only have the now. So we deal with the present, and the present is a gift. Be kind and kindness follows, give and giving returns.”

Changes might take a generation to become a regular practice. So lets resolve now to learn to do the right things at the right time, and make a start.
