About the business:
Ed Warren has been in business as The Furniture Mender since August of 2003. His business is conducted in his workshop which is adjacent to his home in Townsend, Delaware. He serves the entire State of Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland by offering free pickup and delivery within that area. If you would enjoy a ride out in the country, you can drop off your pieces by appointment. Prices are the same either way. He has found that the majority of his customers greatly appreciate this convenient free pickup and delivery service which mostly has gone the way of the past in our society. In order to maintain this free service, Ed schedules pickups and deliveries on the same day within the same areas as much as possible. People have also come as far away as from the Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas to drop off work for him to repair.
The Furniture Mender offers free oral estimates. Sometimes a price range can be given over the phone, but for the most accurate estimate the pieces should be seen. If you require a written estimate to submit a claim and you are not having the work picked up or done that day in your home, there will be a refundable $35 charge. The $35 will be deducted from the cost of the repairs upon completion of the work.
The Furniture Mender can schedule pickups and deliveries around your availability with day or evening appointments seven days a week. Please advise when you will need the work completed. Even with a backlog of work, rush jobs can usually be fit in. Rush jobs are usually pieces that are used on a daily basis such as dining tables or chairs, or presents for special occasions.
You can contact The Furniture Mender by calling 302-449-1878 or email Afurnituremender@cs.com. Please leave a message if you get voicemail and either Ed or Mary, the office manager, will get back to you as soon as possible.
About Ed's Background:
Ed started out making and selling small pieces of furniture at local shows in the 1970's. In 1980 he and his wife, Mary, took several classes in chair caning and weaving. To practice the craft, they started buying broken up old caned chairs which they repaired, refinished and recaned. They then sold the chairs at local events throughout the state of Delaware. After becoming proficient at the craft, Ed and Mary started a chair caning and weaving service business which they conducted out of their house in Newark, Delaware. It soon became apparent that most of their customer's chairs needed repairs before caning could be done, and Ed became so proficient at the repairs that people started requesting him to do work on pieces besides chairs.
Ed and Mary also taught chair caning classes for the City of Newark in the 1980's.
In the mid 1980's, Ed and Mary attended University of Delaware Diversity classes conducted by the curator of Winterhur Museums who did the repairs and maintainence of the antique furniture collection of the museum.
By the late 1980's, they went into the antique market as show dealers thoughout the state of Delaware. They participated in about ten shows a year from Arden to Lewes. They sold mostly larger pieces of furniture that they had repaired and restored.
After moving to Townsend where they had a bigger place to run a business, they started The Furniture Mender. They no longer buy or sell. The Furniture Mender is strictly a service business.
