Come journey through The Desert! Meet the Break Master, listen to Brother Mustard's stories, uncover the ancient writings of St. Isaac of Lafidonia, and find out what happens when Mikey puts on his Jesus Suit. About The Book The Desert is a happy little collection of stories and reflections about grace, difficulty, faith, joy and love. It offers an optimistic perspective of life, based on the reality of God’s goodness. It is funny and lighthearted without flinching from the somber side of life, and it points the reader to a God who loves all of His children deeply and joyfully.
The stories introduce readers to the fictional St. Isaac of Lafidonia and his Silly-Hatted Merry Monks, who live a communal life of joyful service. There’s Mikey, a kid who wears a Jesus Suit as he walks through a sandy, dusty place. There’s a juggling student named The Dropper, who teaches a masterful lesson. And there’s even a psalm for anyone who has ever felt a bit too comfortable.
The Desert was inspired by books like Martin Bell’s The Way of the Wolf and Ed Hays’ Ethiopian Tattoo Shop. Influences include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Brennan Manning, G.K. Chesterton, Henri Nouwen and, believe it or not, Weird Al Yankovic. The stories are an expression of what is being called "emergent Christianity," or "vintage Christianity."
