New Year Competition

To celebrate the not-exactly-unexpected-but-welcome-nonetheless coming of 2009, those playful chaps in the Collegian fun and games department have designed for you a competition so exciting that some people may actually take part without being forced to, and those who are forced to will probably not resent the experience all that much.

The competition, which, naturally, has very, very big prizes
for its lucky winners, takes the form of a treasure hunt. Rather than driving endlessly along country lanes in a vain search for damp bits of paper with illegible clues, however, you have only to travel around the world wide web from the comfort of your computer.

Below you will find a series of questions with accompanying links to internet pages which will tell you the answers to those questions. Read the questions and the pages you visit carefully! There may be tricks! The answer may be on the page you are linked to or you may have to search around a bit. When you have all the answers, e-mail them to the editor at  thecollegian@tlen.pl and you will receive a reply containing the tie-breaker question. Answer that question by the end of the semester (23rd of January) and sent it to the same place. The sender of the best answer to that question will be given a magical surprise bonus to his or her semester grade, where applicable, or a hearty pat on the back and a full page photo-spread* on the Collegian blog where not.

Good luck! The Editor's decision is final!

* The editor reserves the right to limit this prize to the pat on the back if pictures of the winner are likely to cause shock and offence to other readers.

The Questions

1. In which English county would you find Bevendean?

2. What world ranking does British tennis star Andy Murray hold?

3. What percentage of GDP does Poland spend on education? (Clue: it's less than one third of what Cuba spends)

4. What four things are necessary to make wilderness into paradise for Omar Khayyam?

5. What does Lao-tzu's name mean?

And that's it. It really is that simple! Follow the links above, find the answers, send them in to the editor, get the final question, answer that and win win win!
