 3. A Typical Day In A Life Of A New Mother

It’s the question that all new moms want answered. What is the typical day with a newborn like?

Well honestly, there probably isn’t such a thing as a typical day. All babies are different and so are new moms. The thing to remember is that not only are you going though changes, but so is your baby. Think of how traumatic it is for the baby who left the cozy comforts of your warm womb to be greeted by this cold cruel world! To help your baby adjust, make sure to keep the baby wrapped up warm and close to you.

Typically, if you are feeding your baby formula, the feedings will usually occur every 3 to 5 hours. Breastfeeding requires more frequent feedings. If you choose to breastfeed, it may take a toll on you during
the first few weeks. Some mothers complain that all they get done is nursing.

Then, of course, what goes in must come out. Diapers, diapers, diapers. Its wise to check your little one frequently because newborns are especially susceptible to diaper rash.

You can't give your baby a tub bath until he has lost his umbilical cord. Until then, you should wash the baby's bottom, hands, feet, and neck every day with a soft washcloth and warm water and give him a complete sponge bath every day or so. Newborns obviously aren't going to get soiled so unless there is an unusual situation a bath every few days will be sufficient. Once the umbilical cord has fallen off, you can begin daily tub baths with your baby. You will want to pay special attention to how your baby's skin reacts to the soap and shampoo that you are using. Monitor the baby's skin closely after the first few baths. Also, keep the baby's skin well moisturized as a baby's skin is prone to being dry.

Another chore for the new mother is to make sure that the baby's fingernails and toenails are trimmed. Since baby's often flail their hands around they are likely to scratch themselves if their nails aren't trimmed. Most mothers are scared to tackle the trimming. Its best to trim the nails while the baby is sleeping.

There is no typical day in the life of a new baby. It's important to remember to be flexible and learn to go with the flow until you and your baby get into a routine.
