San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women

Resolution Recognizing November 25th as the International Day for the

Elimination of Violence Against Women

           

BE IT KNOWN that the Commission on the Status of Women of the City and County of San Francisco hereby issues, and authorizes the execution, by the subscribing Commissioners, of the following commendation:

 

WHEREAS, The United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to commemorate the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters, Dominican activists protesting the brutal Trujillo dictatorship; and,

 

WHEREAS, According to the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), over 5 million people from around the world, civil society organizations and governments signed on last year to the firm and clear and statement "Say NO," sending the urgent message to governments everywhere that ending violence against women and girls must be a top priority; and,

 

WHEREAS, This November, UNIFEM will take the initiative one step further and launch a new platform for action, "Say NO–UNiTE," to end violence against women, in support of the UN Secretary-General’s campaign to end violence against women involving governments, civil society and the entire UN system; and

 

WHEREAS, "Say NO–UNiTE" will count and showcase actions taken by individuals, organizations and governments worldwide to end violence against women; and,

 

WHEREAS, In San Francisco, Mamacoatl and Nina Serrano, members of the Women's Wisdom Work Collective, have been raising awareness about the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women since 2005, and will be organizing a press conference in partnership with this Commission and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services on November 25;

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women commits to supporting the "Say No-UNITE" campaign and will work in solidarity with the Women's Wisdom Work Collective, our Partner Agencies, other community advocates, government agencies, and all other stakeholders to end all forms of violence against women and girls.
