Dice Rolling Mechanics

First I must explain that this is not a pure d20 system. There are some simple additions and minor changes to the dice.

Character Dice
Characters have dice assigned to them based on level. For characters levels 1 to 9 you get to roll your d20. Now at level 10 something happens and you get to roll 2d10 instead, this continues through 19. At level 20 one of those d10 changes to a d12 and for levels 20 through 29 you get to roll d10 + d12. Finally for levels 30 to 39 you get to roll 2d12.

The character dice are rolled for pretty much everything except where otherwise specified. All of the combat rolls and skill checks will be rolled using the Character Dice. Another thing, for levels 10 and above you get exploding character dice. That means that whenever you roll a maximum on a die you get to roll it again and add it to your total. (Exceptions will be labeled).

Action Dice
Characters are given an action dice every two levels starting with level 1. For levels 1 through 9 you get d2's, and levels 10 through 19 you get d4's, levels 20 through 29 you get d6's, and levels 30 through 39 you get d8's. These dice may be added to any roll made at any time the player wants (the player must indicate that they are going to roll with action dice before the roll is made), unless the gm says no.

Rolling
Rolling for any action in the game is simple roll your character dice (any action dice if you so choose), and then add the applicable modifier. If your result meets or exceeds the required amount you succeed, otherwise you fail. There is an optional success failure scale that follows, and does not apply to combat.

 Amount   relative to passing  Result
 -5 or less
You fail pretty spectacularly, roll to see if you accidentally damage something, plus the result found below
 -2 and lower
You fail leaving things mostly in tact, work previously done may be reversed roll to find out
 -1
You simply fail, nothing bad happens
0  You have a simple success
 +1
You succeed in slightly faster time than you would have before, nothing significant happens
 +2 and higher
You succeed and the result is actually better than it would otherwise be
 +5 and higher
You succeed in about half the time and decide to do double the work, and succeed at doing that. (this only applies when working on something that takes multiple rounds to work on).
