Persons who are interested in checking out the free community class to learn more about Aztec dance & culture are invited to join us on Wednesdays at 5:30--7:00 pm at Roosevelt Community Center located at 901 E. Santa Clara Street, San Jose. The drop-in class is open to the community as a beginner's class-no previous experience is necessary. Per Roosevelt Community Center rules, participants must be at least 14 years of age or older to participate in fitness classes. Although class instruction is free, a $1 dollar per each class/ per student is requested at the Sign-In table by Roosevelt Community Center to hold these Open community classes at their facility space/ dance studio.
The format of the class is similar to a workshop in that the class is structured into three parts- drumming techniques & drills, dance step techniques & warm-ups, and ends with a moderate dance workout. Interested individuals should call or email before attending first class for more details. Below are some general rules and guidelines to follow during our class at Roosevelt Community Center. If attending for the first time, please download, complete and sign the rules & waiver form (PDF attachment below). Also, please arrive a few minutes early to check-in with us. We ask all students to dress comfortably in work-out clothes, bring a water bottle, and a notepad to write down notes. Please take a look at the posted rules below and PDF waiver form.
Students should observe the following rules for the safety and well-being of other students, staff, visitors, and to maintain order.
- Arrive in a timely manner, get dressed, and be ready to begin class at the set start time and participate for the full class time unless discussed with class teacher ahead of time.
- Welcome/ greet all group members, class participants and students at each practice.
- Be respectful of the class, teachers, students, center staff, and all visitors.
- Observe all facility/ community center rules (i.e. no wearing of any blue/ navy, red/ maroon colors, no chewing gum or wearing shoes that may scuff dance floor).
- Wear appropriate clothes and bring water. (For men: T-shirts, shorts, sweatpants. For Women: T-shirts, tank tops, sweatpants but preferably long skirts (Huipil) with shorts underneath.)
- Acknowledge that participation in class is voluntary and release legal liability of teacher/ group leader and community center/ facilities in the event of any unforeseeable event or injury.
- Students should bring to each class a notepad and hand rattle or use /borrow items provided in class until they obtain their own.
- If student has physical limitations or injuries, student must communicate/ inform class teacher.
- Communicate with teacher if student anticipates that they will not be able to attend for an extended period of time or can not continue.
- No one under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be allowed to participate during practice and will be asked to leave or will be escorted by facility staff.
- No inappropriate/ disrespectful conduct will be tolerated towards other students, group members, dancers or any other persons through any means of physical/ verbal/ emotional abuse or sexual misconduct.
- Please look after your own personal belongings. Neither the class teacher or center is responsible for any misplaced or lost belongings.
- Participants must be 14 years of age or older to participate on the dance/ drum floor. Children younger than 14 are welcome to watch provided they take a seat inside the classroom to watch. Per the Center's rules, children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and can not be left unsupervised outside of the dance studio area, unless they are participating in another Community Center's Kid's Class/ Program, etc.
