Backcountry closures for 2010 Olympics

posted ‎‎Apr 1, 2009 12:27 PM‎‎ by Antje Wahl   [ updated ‎ ]
Cypress Provincial Park
There will be no access by road to Cypress Provincial Park at all from February 1, 2010 to March 8, 2010. Only the buses carrying the pre-screened ticket holders, competitors, staff and VIP's will be allowed up the road. So it is going to be similar to airport security with off-site screening in North Vancouver prior to spectators boarding the buses. The schedule of events is in the current Yellow Pages and at http://www.vancouver2010.com/

The Hollyburn Mountain Hikers Access Trail will be open this winter to the peak of Hollyburn until February 1, 2010, when the entire park will close for the 2010 Olympics. It will re-open on March 9, 2010, so there should roughly be a total ( before and after the Olympics) of about 12 to 14 weeks of open winter access to the backcountry on Hollyburn, with the 7 week full closure being from February 1 to March 8 as was expected for some years.

Cypress Bowl trailheads for Black Mountain, the Yew Lake area and the Howe Sound Crest Trail will remain closed from December 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 due to construction, security and other 2010 Olympics related issues.

Trail access summary
Hollyburn Hikers Access Trail to Hollyburn Peak: Closed February 1 to March 8, 2010.
Black Mountain Winter Access corridor: Closed December 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.
Howe Sound Crest Winter Access corridor including Yew Lake Trail and Bowen Lookout: Closed December 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.

Check the BC Parks website for any closure updates: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/cypress/

Callaghan Valley
The Biathlon and Day Lodge parking lots will be closed to the public for the duration of the 2009-2010 winter season. The Nordic core area will also be closed for grand stand construction, and other preparations for the Olympics. The route to Hanging Lake will be inaccessible for the whole season. Routes up Beverley Creek may be accessed from the Callaghan Country base via the Madeley Loop trail ($6 backcountry access trail ticket required).

Garibaldi Provincial Park
Garibaldi Provincial Park is not closed or restricted at all during the games. However, the access road to Cheakamus Lake and the access road to the Black Tusk Microwave tower will be closed to the public due to their proximity to the athletes' village. Skiers and other backcountry users will not be allowed access through those two roads. Skiers coming from the backcountry (e.g. Whistler Mtn) to the Cheakamus Lake road will most likely be stopped by security but then let out to Highway 99. All other access routes into the park will be open as usual.
