Science
Daily news in every science imaginable, sorted in sections like health, mind, animals, climate, space, energy, fossils, electronics, archeology, etc. It would be hard to not find something every day which makes one say 'hmmm'. Good archives for researching topics and news as well.
Daily news in future sciences like nanotech, physics, medicines, space/time, etc. Worth reading through once a week, and good for research.
Daily news in sciences also, with sections like animals, odd things, environment, space, etc. Another food site for once a week wandering if you don't check the other science sites.
A well-rounded site for 'green' and environmental world news and technologies.
Dozens of daily news articles from around the world regarding anything to do with the environment, health, and humanity's welfare. I only check in if I need to look deeper into a news item of the day Daily news regarding future technologies and all which wraps around it, like laws and humanity. Probably the most read news site by anyone working in IT fields. A bit anti-microsoft slant, but it's bearable.
This is a site mentioned in the 'video' section, and this is the daily blog from the site, it's a quick read of daily advances in many areas of science, with good links and videos.
This blog is run by the company 23andme.com, which does the DNA testing for people, since new gene functions are found almost weekly now, someone who has had their DNA tested can check here to see what new news has been found out about their own programming, the meanings behind the functions.
Tech
A daily site listing lots of newly released cellphones, portable electronics, and such items, since they come out at such a dizzying rate this is a good site for seeing some of the new and upcoming items.
Another tech site, with daily updated links to reviews and news on tech things, plus interesting 'tidbits' on whats going on around us. Good for twice a week of whipping through their pages of news.
Monthly updated video news about security, or lack thereof, on the internet and in systems, a good watch to find out what you won't hear elsewhere since it might be a bit too in depth for some people, yet still is sometimes shocking information.
A tech site thats mostly related to videocards (an aggressive industry since videocards advance faster than most other internal computer parts) but is worth checking once a week for news, their forums are handier than their news page and great for getting video tips and help.
Daily tech news, more like a gossip/speculation tech site where they cover whats being 'heard' in the multitude of tech fields. I do find their information is worthy of checking in on a couple times a week and it does not get too deep for those lesser-inclined to know tech terms.
A tech news site that keeps daily short single-paragraph summaries to news from other tech news sites with articles of interest in hardware, software, laws, internet and more. They also have a software section and a games section so you can keep updated on those as well. Worth checking in on once or twice a week.
A couple times a week I check into this site to check up on any more tech news i might have missed elsewhere, and I also look into the newly released and beta versions of software i use since this site also does an ok job (no one site could manager all new programs and updates daily/weekly) of indexing these.
This is one guys' site who keeps an almost-daily collection of news regarding the program 'google earth', which is a great, free 'virtual 3d satellite earth' program. Because theres so many possibilities of anyone being able to add information and overlays to this 'virtual earth', new things are being released by companies and individuals monthly which can be added to google earth, so I check here once a week to find out what is happening, since this program is a fast growing portion of internet use, and is still largely untapped.
This is the official google earth blog where they reveal new updates to google earth, with a few new updates every week.

The Rest
My favorite site for weather, especially their 'tropical' section during hurricane season. Their new 'wundermap' radar combines google satellite with weather overlays, which really helps to visualize weather better than ever. Definitely worth their $10/year charge to have an account, and it's best to setup the options to reduce clutter and include only what you want showing.
A news site about food and drink, and links to interesting sites devoted to eating and drinking. Good to check every sunday if you like to read about interesting edible news.
Daily news about random quirky events, people, or items. I like to check in on it a couple times a week, and it's definitely got the most variety of interesting news you'll find online.
Its one mans daily write-up regarding the economic 'weather', I only check in when I see something in mainstream news and I want to learn more about it, but if you deal with investments or money in any way, this is a good site to keep in mind.
Hollywood news with certain angles of humor and sarcasm, the only way I'd even know whats going on in hollywood is by going to these sites once a week.
Google news I like because you can see the 'type' of news event (say, "world leaders meet at g8 summit"), and then this site lists 1000s of news outlets around the world, so that you can read about an event from different angles/perspectives and choose the bias of your choice (as in, you choose the media outlet to read/watch about the event which happened, and compare/contrast).
You can also nicely customize the news site so you can see exactly the type of news you want, and where you want it from. Also good for researching any type of news since they index the 1000s of daily articles for future reference. News junkies should keep this site on-hand.
This is a beta test of googles move into indexing the worlds news, so they are trying this format, where you can quickly scan websites homepages based on geographical location, or news event, etc. good to check in on their progress every couple months.
cnn.com and pbpost.com
For mainstream local (to me) and national events I just go to these regular meathook news sites, since I dont like watching the crummy "streamlined for dummies" news on tv, but would rather read up on them, and watch videos of the actual events on demand.
For the biggest source of news on the radio, and considering the enormity of news and archives they have online, I would think they'd have a better layout of their site, so I rarely go onto their main page since it's quite a random barrage of articles, I just link straight to the sections I prefer, but it's still a huge site of the most 'independant' news one can find in the US, I think it's much like what the BBC is to the UK.
This is irans state-funded media outlet, like the bbc in the uk or npr in the us. i check here once a week just to get a feel of whats going on over there. |
