Last week, the Israeli Knesset held
its 18th legislative elections. Of the last 8 elections, only one
Knesset assembly finished its full term before having to hold
elections. After last Monday's election, party leaders for both the
Kadima and the Likud parties have declared victory as they prepare to
build coalition governments.
To better explain what this all means and what effect this will have
on the international community, your JLSA will be hosting Lieutenant
Ruthie Koren (Res.), the Special Liaison for Consular
Affairs for the Israeli Consulate in Philadelphia to explain how the
Israeli parliamentary government works, the various political parties
that make up the Israeli government and the results of last weeks
election.
We hope you can make it. Pizza will be served.

Hostilities in the Gaza Strip gave way to a fragile ceasefire over
the weekend. Each side is left now to stand for judgment in the
(global) court of public opinion, and to assess its losses. That being
said, the underlying tension that gave rise to the conflict remains
intact.
For that reason, your JLSA feels that the responsible approach is
to provide a forum in which each and every student can express his or
her opinion- regardless of what cause that student supports. In fact,
for a legitimate discussion to take place, all views must be
represented. To that end, JLSA - in association with the Israeli
Consulate in Philadelphia and Young Jewish Leadership Concepts - is
inviting ALL Temple Law students to join with us as
we strive for a measured conversation about the Gaza Conflict.
Lieutenant Ruthie Koren (Res.), now the Special Liaison for Consular Affairs for the
Israeli Consulate in Philadelphia, will set forth the State of Israel's
positions on the cause, justification, and objectives of the
conflict. As a formally educated lawyer, she is prepared to
articulate the international legal bases on which Israel purports to
rely in support of its actions. She will also address your
frustrations about humanitarian concerns, and she will be happy to
answer your questions on other related topics. For more information about Lt. Koren, click
here.
No matter your view on the Gaza Conflict, this is your chance to make your voice heard!
WHEN: THIS THURSDAY, 1/21, at 6:00 pm
