IMPORTANT!

The Android Market has changed a few settings (LVL, copy protection, etc.), and therefore the application came be inaccessible on some devices. Therefore, I modified a few settings (I disabled the copy protection on the market). Hence the application is broken on some devices. (Mostly on Android 1.5 and some Hero with Android 2.1-update.) If the application constantly crashes, please uninstall and re-install it. After re-install you have to setup the app again. When you uninstall the app the log files won't delete. Sorry for the inconvenience.

About the program

The GPST is a lightweight, easy to use GPS route tracker, recorder and analyzer for Android mobiles.
The program provides extensive information on the current situation: e.g. speed, coords, etc.,
and provides graphical statistics: speed changes, altitude changes, map, etc.

Quick guide

First turn on the GPS on your phone. Start the GPSTracker. To start recording the route tap on  Start button. After this you can send the program into background with the  Background button. You can even send your phone into sleep mode, the app will record data. With the CheckPoint button you can split the route into more section. For stop recording push the  Stop button. If you push the  Exit button the recording also will finish.

Properties of the route


Tagging

You can categorize your tracks with tags. You can set up your tags in the settings or on-the-fly when you start recording. Then add one or more tags to your track. On the Manage logs screen you see the logs separeted by tags.

On this screen you can see some information of your current state:

Date & Time

Shows the current date and time. This bases on the settings of your phone.

Speed (distance/time & time/distance)

Available: only when there is stable GPS connection
Shows your current speed. (Horizontal or ground speed.) This bases on GPS data.

Vertical speed (distance/time & time/distance)

Available: only when there is stable GPS connection
Shows your curernt vertical speed. This bases on GPS data. Accuracy of vertical speed depends on the accuracy of altitude which is bit unreliable.

Acceleration

Shows the acceleration of the mobile. It uses the acceleration chip of your mobile if available

Latitude, longitude, altitude

Available: only when there is stable GPS connection
Shows your current position

Accuracy

Available: only when there is stable GPS connection
Shows the accuracy of the GPS-based data: speed, location, etc.

Orientation

Shows the orientation of your phone.

Distance

Available: only when there is stable GPS connection and you already started the the recording.
Shows the ellapsed distance from the start of the recording.

Distance to

Available only when there is stable GPS connection and you put a target on the map.
Shows the remaining distance to the target.

Bearing to

Available only when there is stable GPS connection and you put a target on the map.
Shows the bearing to the target.

Tempreature

Available only when ther is temperature sensor in your mobile.
Shows the temperature data of your mobile.
The temperature sensor is inside the cover near to the accu of your mobile, so this value is a bit unreliable.


Options

If you press the Menu button of your phone you can change the layout and font size of this screen.
Via the Menu button of the phone you can select the info that you want to see.


Alerts

Tap long one of the info to open the Alerts & Auto checkpoints dialog. On this dialog you can set highest and/or lowest value as a limit. Outside of the limit the app will alert visually and/or audiovisually. Optional you can set that the app automatically split the route into more part using checkpoint.

About sharing

Generally there are 2 ways to send a recorded (started and already stopped) route to your friends: manual and automatic. If you want to send manual or on-demand go to "Manage logs" screen and tap on the " ... " button next to that route that you want to send. There are the sharing facilities (http://sites.google.com/site/telekgabor/android/gpst/gpstmanagelogs2.png). If you want to sending every routes at every time that you recorded go to the "Settings" screen and "Sharing" tab (http://sites.google.com/site/telekgabor/android/gpst/gpstsettings2.png). On that screen you can set some sharing behaviour: always/ask/never for each sharing services. After you stop recording (and if you have internet connection) sharing starting automatic and immediately. (If you haven't internet connection actually the file goes to a queue.)

To share your route on Google MyMap first you have to send your recorded route to Google MyMaps. And you can send (e.g. in email) the URL of the map. You can find this URL in your browser if you go to the http://maps.google.com/ (log in) and choose your desired map.

Sharing via both Google MyMaps and Facebook does it automatic: on the Facebook entry there is a link to the newly created map on Google MyMaps.

Note: before the first time using each sharing service probably it ask for username and password. Important: GPSTracker never ask your password, it only opens the authentication page of the sevice in your default browser, the service itself ask for your passoword.

Exporting & sharing

The app provides some main exporting and shaing facilities. All of used services are free, easy-to-use and gives you the ability to forward to even more services and programs.
  1. To export the graphical map use the Google MyMaps. In this you can create several maps with one or more tracks. You can send the link of the map to your friends.
  2. If you want to create more sofisticated statistics and graph, export the route to Google Spreadsheet. (With this you can export forward to Microsoft Excel or Open Office, etc.)
  3. To share your tracks with your friends, you can use the number one social networiking site: the Facebook.
  4. Both of Google Spreadsheets and Facebook entry contains a link to Google MyMaps (if you use it).
  5. And at last, if these facilities isn't enough for you, GPSTracker saves the data in GPX format, you can copy or send in e-mail to anywhere.
You can use each sharing facilites on-demand or automatic after stop recording.

FAQ

General

  • What is "GPSTracker Lite old /API3 only"?
    "GPSTracker Lite" is compatible with Android 1.5+ and supports any screen resolution (HVGA, QVGA, WVGA, etc.). "GPSTracker Lite old /API3 only" is compatible with Android 1.5+ and supports only HVGA screens. Unfortunately I haven't phone with the standard HVGA screen, so I can test this release only with Android emulator. Both of these releases has the same functions. So if you find both program in the market, use "GPSTracker Lite".

  • I found a bug. Will you fix it?
    Yes, of course. I fix every reported bug, as soon as possible.
  • When comes a new release with new features?
  • I make this program in my free time as a hobby. (Unfortunately I haven't much free time.) I have much idea to put in the program so I try to publish new release in each month.
  • There are differences in the measured data with this and other GPS based tracker.
    Mostly it depends on your GPS chip in your phone. The GPSTracker don't rounding or interpolate at all.
  • Do you have any plans to add knots as a unit for gps tracker?
  • Because there are many measurement systems and many measurement units the app now provides only the basic systems and units. In a later version I plan that you can select the unit and precision at each occurance. (Q4)
  • Under Settings, Advanced, what does the "Auth tokens" button do?
  • Auth tokens screen shows that services or web sites that you use for sharing: e.g. GPST sends the graph to _your_  Google Maps (so I call this Google MyMaps), so this why before the first time you share you have to grant access in GMM for GPST to write your repository. If you grant this right then GMM gives a token to GPST. GPST with this token can send graphs any time until you revoke the right (or the token expires). When you revoke the right the token will be invalid. You can revoke the right on GMM and in the app.
  • How can I donate?
  • Now there are two ways. In both of them you have to register first.
    1. PayPal: If you can, use this please. Just click the button below and you can set the amount of the donation, and you can also write a message for me.
    2. SlideMe Market: this market is like the original Android Market but I can use it for commercial apps from here Hungary. You can find the app with this keyword: gpstracker.
  • What is the different between the release in the Android Market and the donation version of this program in the SlideMe Market?
  • When I finish a new release I publish it first in the original Android Market. Unfortunately there is much different Android devices and I can't test with all. So there can be bugs. If somebody report me a bug I fix it ASAP and publish the app again. If nobody report me bug for two or three days then I publish the donation version in the SlideMe Market. So the donation release is the sam as the free version but it is more stable everytime. (From here Hungary it's hard to publish commercial apps in the original Android Market, that's why I must use the SlideMe Market.)
  • I've read on forums the app works on machines like mine, but I can't find it in the Android Market. Can you send me the APK?
  • I've get feedbacks the app sometimes disappears from the market and automatically appears a little while after. Please try it later. If the problems seems to be persistent...
    There are 3 versions available: 2 in the original Android Market: "GPSTracker" and "GPSTracker API3" (use it only if you can't find GPSTracker) and 1 "GPSTracker" in the SlideMe Market. (At this moment.) I take effort to fix the bugs and improve the app instead of sending the APK to people. Once If I send the APK to someone, after that I have to send the every newer version to every people. I consider very important that everybody have the newest and the most reliable version. Please accept if you can't find the app neither in the original Android Market nor in the SlideMe Market the actual version is incompatible with your machine. And stay tuned I'm on the way to fix every bug.

GPS and network

  • When it uses net connection?
  • It uses net connection in the following cases:
    • when you use Google Map as background on the map view. You can turn it of in the Settings.
    • when you sharing data with Google MyMaps, Facebook, etc. In this case there is an upload signing icon on the notification bar.
    • when you send the data file in e-mail
    • when you open the settings and the app detects net connection, it fills the list of exiting maps for sharing via Google MyMaps.
    • at startup if the app crashed last run
    • at exit sends usage statistics if there is net connection. This feature will optional in later releases, now it helps a lot me to improve the app.
So mostly you don't need net connection. You can save power with turning off the net connection.
  • GPS don't pick up signal.
  • Turn on the GPS (e.g. in the settings of the phone or in GPST) and go a place where you see big part of the clean sky and wait for the signal. Depending on circumstances it could takes few minutes. (GPST doesn't turn on and off automatically the GPS and net.)

Google MyMaps

  • Is possible to export the colored map line to Google MyMaps?
  • No, because of the limitations of Google My Maps. (But I looking for other usable solutions.)
  • What can I edit in MyMaps?
  • You can do everything with your maps.
  • Why the route on Google MyMaps gets split up in to many parts?
  • This is because the limitation of Google MyMaps. One route can contains only up to 500 waypoints. I looking for other solution e.g. OpenStreets.

Google Spreadsheets

  • What can I edit in Spreadsheets?
  • There are several limitation in Google Spreadsheets. So don't edit the automatically created sheet ("Sheet 1"): don't delete or add row or column. (The only thing is you can do safely: you can change its display (e.g. width of the columns) of the table.) You can create a new sheet, in which you can refer to the original data. In that sheet you can create a table what contains data what you want. You can create graphs from the referring data in the new sheet.
  • In Google Spreadsheets why contains one cell more values?
  • In Google Spreadsheets "data table" can contains 20 max columns. Create new sheet and from that refer to the parts of the data. ("Data table" is not equivalent with a general table.)
  • Something went wrong in my Google Spreadsheets. I can't upload at all couse an "500 Internal server error". What can I do?
  • Create a copy of your spreadsheet (if you want a backup) and delete the original. The GPST won't find it and creates a new one.

Facebook

  • The Facebook authorization doesn't working.
  • Please try it later. This is a common transient problem. I use Google App Engine to make a bridge between the application and the Facebook and the GAE is a bit unreliable. I've read Facebook plan to use OAuth to authorize applications. As soon as they finish this I will drop GAE.
