WEB-PLUS, Personal Projects on the Internet Web-Plus Exciting changes are happening on the Internet! You are longer limited to looking up information or sending email messages; you can now find web sites that allow you free work and storage space for documents, photos, and group projects. Much of what we'll look at is at www.google.com. however, we'll look at other sites as well. In order to post or create with these services, you will have to register. These services require that you have an email account. At the Google site, you can use either your Google email (Gmail) account, or even your Yahoo email account to register. When you want to access 'the stuff" that you've stored, you must login to start a session. Photos - Sharing and sending is now much improved, cumbersome e-mail attachments are not necessary anymore. You may already have used Google
Maps to find addresses, but, if you're registered at the Google site,
you can also make your own personalized map, using the "My Map"

Google Docs gives you an online word processing program and a presentation program that you can edit from any computer hooked up to the Internet. if you want to make it a group project, you can allow others to edit as well.
Google Groups - Starting or joining a group is like having a club or discussion group that you can attend any time that's convenient. You can share tips and ideas with people who have similar interests. Take a tour.
A free web page is fast and easy at Google Sites. Even easier, is Google’s iGoogle page that you can set up
for personalized daily use. Go to Google. Use
your Gmail (or other email account) to register, and then click on “iGoogle" at
the top of Google’s search page to make a customized page for yourself.
Invitation! Join "Tek-Bits", a new group where we can share ideas and help ourselves learn new skills. 1. You need to have signed up for a Google account, first. 2. If you have an account, go to the Tek-Bits URL, http://groups.google.com/group/TekBits . 3. So far, it's by invitation only, so if you click where it says "Contact the Owner" you can email a message that you want to join. Please include your library card number, if you can. You can choose a nickname to use and your preferences (updates by email? or viewing on site only?). 4. When you receive your membership confirmation message, you will be able to access the group. From then on, you can log into the group, view what others have to say, submit postings, and participate in discussions. |
