Web 2.0 Tools

The tools I have listed are the ones I have used (with success!) in the Bennington School District schools.

  • PBWorks: this wiki allows teachers to add students as users.  Students do not need an email account.  They are able to build pages, collaborate with others and comment on other pages.
  • Time Toast:  an interactive timeline that allows multiple students to log into a classroom account at the same time.  Students can create timelines with pictures and text.
  • Dipity: an interactive timeline that allows multiple users on the same account.  Supports videos, images and text.
  • Bubbl.us:  brainstorming and organizational charts.  Bubbl.us does not allow multiple users on the same account. However, if the chart is for one time use and not to be saved, Bubbl.us allows charts to be made without an account.
  • Glogster EDU: online poster tool.  Glogster EDU allows students to create posters with links, pictures, video, text (in colorful text boxes) and graphics.  This tool used to have free teacher accounts with 50 student accounts.  Recently, Glogster EDU added a "pay" component.  Teachers can have one free account but must pay to have student accounts.  It does allow multiple students to log into the same account.
  • Wallwisher:  online notice board maker.  Teachers can create a board and share it with others.  Students may comment on the notice board's topic.  Teachers can adjust settings so that comments are moderated first.
  • VoiceThread: a multimedia, collaborative slideshow that allows users to share images, videos and comments. Comments can be moderated
    • Commenting on VoiceThreads is not as intuitive as one might think. Guidelines on how to direct your students can be found on the wiki "Digitally Speaking."
    • Examples from the BSD:
      • 2nd Grade
        • "17 Things I'm not allowed to do anymore" - Ms. Ferris's class (Molly Stark) makes connections in their own lives to this book by Jenny Offill and Nancy Carpenter.  Students used Kid Pix to draw their connections.
        • Dinosaurs - Mrs. Farrington's class (Benn El) studied dinosaurs.  They researched facts and drew pictures in Kid Pix of their dinosaurs and their habitat.
      • 4th Grade
        • "Vermont - A Special Place" - Mrs. Goodhue's class (Monument) explored Vermont history and culture.  Using Gimp, students cut out pictures of themselves (with assistance from the art teacher, Mrs. Greene) and pasted them into Vermont pictures.
      • 5th Grade
        • Colonial Era: Mrs. Donza's class researched battles, historical figures and Acts of the colonial era.  They used Gimp to cut themselves out of pictures and put themselves into pictures of colonial times.
