Word/Tag Cloud Makers

On this page you'll find links to websites that let you create word clouds.

"tag cloud or word cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, used typically to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color.  Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag."

  • Wordle - Perhaps the most well known word cloud maker. This site lets you paste in text or specify a web address and then creates an word cloud for you.

The resulting cloud is an image and so each word cannot easily be hyperlinked to other resources.

Also if you want to put the resulting image into a word document or powerpoint then I recommend using Jing to take a screenshot of the cloud and paste it into your documents easily.

  • Tagul - Tagul performs a similar function to Wordle, however it lets you attach hyperlinks to each word in the resulting cloud which means you can link resources to each item.

This is very useful if you have all of your resources online and wish to create a revision word cloud for your students which outlines the topics your have covered with them.

  • TagCrowd - This is similar to Wordle so which one you choose is down to personal preference.

"Kim Cavanaugh and Jamey Akien play with the world of Wordle, a Web 2.0 application that will take your text in paragraphs or sentences or a list and turn it into a picture. It's a great tool for inspiring young writers and a lot of fun."
