Podcasting

"A podcast is a series of digital-media files, which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The term podcast, like broadcast, can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also called podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster."

On this page you'll find links to create 2 types of podcast:
  • Audio Podcasts - Here you'll be recording MP3 files and then distributing them to your students.

  • Video Podcasts - Similar to audio podcasts but this time you'll be recording video's and then broadcasting them to your students by setting up your own Internet TV channel (don't worry it's not as scary as it sounds!!).

Why should you podcast?

Before you begin to learn how to podcast, take a look at this article from the Guardian. Titled "Why every school should be podcasting" it outlines the many benefits that can result in the use of podcasts in educational establishments.

Creating Audio Podcasts

There are many ways to create an audio podcast but all of them consist of roughly the same steps:
  1. Record an MP3 using a microphone & audio editing software, like Audacity:

"Recording an audio podcast and adding bumper music is fairly easy. Watch this tutorial and see how you can easily record and edit an audio mp3 file for inclusion in your podcast with audacity software.
This recording is aimed at the real estate industry (yet it is relatively generic). This video is produced by: RealEstateBuzzBox.com "

  2. Upload the MP3 to an online file storage site, like Microsoft Skydrive.  Make sure that the file is publicly viewable, if it's not then the podcast won't work.
If you are going to use Skydrive to host your MP3 files (recommended) then you can tread a tutorial on how to do this here.

  3. Publish the web address (URL) of the uploaded MP3 via an RSS feed.
You can use Google Blogger to accomplish Step 3, this article shows you how - click here to read it, or just watch the video below:
