My name is Louise Maine. I am a Google Certified Teacher and a High School Biology teacher for the Punxsutawney Area School District. The purpose of this Google site is to provide information for workshops given on the various google tools.

Session activities

  1. Where are you going on vacation or would like to go on vacation? Find this place on the map.

  2. Question and answer round using Google maps search
  3. Find a place in Google maps that you would like to visit.
  4. Find the following:
  • Directions
  • Places of interest nearby (find a picture, link to a website, information)
  • Find places to eat (find a picture, link to a website, information)
  • Find other interesting landmarks (find a picture, link to a website, information)
  • Click on my maps
  • Make a new map
  • Place 3-5 placemarks with information, pictures, and links of places you found
  • Explore sharing functions
  • Click on View in Google Earth - a kml file for Google Earth is generated

Background

Most people are familiar with google Maps for finding driving directions. You do not need a Google Account to use Google Maps, but you do need one to create a map.
  • Search and get step by step driving directions
  • Plan a trip with multiple stops
  • Check live traffic conditions where available
  • Customize your trip by dragging and dropping points
  • Look at various views from street level, traffic, satellite, and terrain
  • Layer with photos, videos, and wikipedia
  • Use Google maps to easily make placemarks and then save in Google Earth

Searching specifics of places to visit

  1. Select a search term in the search bar.
  2. You can get directions, look at the street view of the area, read reviews and view more information.

Making a map

  1. To the left of the map, click on My Maps.
  2. Then click Create new map.
  3. Title it. Don't forget to save from time to time.
  4. Click on the blue balloon to add a placemark. Drag it to the area on the map you want and click to make it stay. A box pops up to add information. Click on "Rich text" in the pop up for more editing options. Create a title, a paragraph text, and add the URL for an online picture. Save your information.
  5. Repeat with more placemarks. Be sure to save your map.
  6. To save it and be able to open in Google Earth: Click on "View in Google Earth" and a kml file will be created. double click this to open up Google Earth.

Go to Mapmaker.
  • Easily add or edit roads, businesses, parks, schools and other features.
  • Using Google Map Maker tools to visually mark locations and add information about the locations.
  • Once you have submitted content, information can be edited by other users.
  • Publish your content in Google Maps for others to see and use.
