Fundraising for the WKA World Championships

posted 28 Feb 2012 05:06 by John Young

We will be doing a lot of Fundraising over the next few months 7 fighters qualified for the Scotland team to compete at the WKA world championships in Florida

Kicking off with rag bag collections, every one will get one home and any old clothes and textiles bring them in to help with fundraising

Also planned are a sponsored kick-a-thon, Inter club competition with fight nights and race nights at a later date we are also looking at bag packing in either Asda or Tesco

I would like all club members to get involved with fund raising it might not be you this time but when you qualify the support of everyone is very much needed and appreciated

any additional money raised will be used by the club to get new equipment , Mats, focus pads, kick shields etc...
Any adult students or parents that would like to help out by setting up a fundraising committee we would be very grateful of the assistance

Also any local businesses that would like to sponsor a fighter or the team any donation would be appreciated
the total cost to send every one would be in the region of £7,000 in the past we have managed to save each fighter about £200 this year lets see if we can save them a little more this year

thank you

WKA Scottish Open Oct 2011

Well done to the Raptors fighting in this big well run competition.

With many of our students making their competition debut and others stepping up to advanced categories
Starting of with the junior members
Lauren McLay took second place in her category after the final going to extra time ( this was only Lauren's 2nd competition and she fought really well)

Lauren Cowen was was next up and took 2nd place in her category ( this was Lauren's 1st competition and due to her grade went straight in to the advanced section,) Lauren lead for the majority of her final against a very experienced fighter only getting pipped in the end by a couple of head kicks, another very promising display

Tristan Viviers was up next in junior boys  and took 2nd place in his first competition, well done Tristan Another excellent debut

on to the adults now and Jo Vazquez and Chelsea Chrighton were in the junior ladies +60kg
Jo was making her competition debut and didn't get in to her stride till to late and lost her semi final, Jo had to fight for 3rd place Again this time Jo started slow but got her hand working late on but was unable to close the points gap and had to settle for 4th place but gained a lot of valuable experience. In the other half of the draw the more experienced chelsea was on fire winning her semi final by 10 clear point, then doing the same in the final to take a well deserved 1st place

Laura Wallace was in the senior ladies -60kg category for the first time stepping up from juniors Laura had the very experienced Ria Davidson in the semi final and was beaten but didn't look out of place in the advanced category, Laura was not firing on all cylinders in her 3rd place fight off and had to settle for 4th place but once the nerves of moving up have passed I'm sure Laura will be lifting trophies in that category

Junior Men -85kg saw three of our fighters in the category with Keith Hogg, Jamie Scott and Ross Lumsden stepping on to the mat, Jamie and Ross were in their first competition and Jamie had the misfortune to be drawn against Keith in the first round Keith's experience showed through and he advanced to the next round, Ross after taking a knock to the nose had to withdraw from his fight but was leading by a point at the time. Keith Narrowly lost his semi final but was extremely unlucky. Keith took 3rd place.

Rab Ewart made his debut for team Raptors in the advanced -65kg continuous and points categories, Rab is an experienced continuous fighters and showed impressive display's right through to the final discipline let him down in the final and due to disqualification had to settle for 2nd in a category that should of been his, his points fighting still needs work with him going out in the first round but he has just recently started training with us and will come on leaps and bounds in the future

David Inglis once again suffered with the draw and had david firth in the first round of his points going out after a battling display,

in the heavyweight continuous fought in the ring for the first time, David Inglis and Steven Carruthers both represented the raptors, David beaten in the first round by a split decision steven facing the same guy in the final in an other close fight, steven had to settle for 2nd place ( both these fight are available to view on the raptors facebook page.

well done again to you all,
