Mrs. Carmona-Peterson's Language Arts Class

Mrs. Carmona-Peterson's Language Arts Class

WELCOME parents and students! I am very excited to begin the 2009-2010 school year.  This is my third year at Dr. Hornedo Middle School and would like to introduce myself as your new 8th grade Language Arts teacher, Claudia P. Carmona-Peterson.  I hope to spark interest in the area of Language Arts.  Our team offers this site to encourage students to take ownership of their education and of course, be successful.  I'm here to help students and I am open to any helpful suggestions.

STUDENT GRADES  on the parent portal should be updated on a weekly basis. If you have any questions please e-mail me at cpcarmon@episd.org.

MATERIALS

This year we will be creating literature portfolios.  Portfolios will keep track of students progress from the beginning of the year to the end.  It will be a useful tool for Hornedo students going on to their high school career.  Students will house their binder in class, therefore removing the need to go to their locker for materials.  It will save them time, energy and stress of getting materials and making it to my class on time.

At the end of the year students will review their progress and see how much they have grown and they will have a reference book for future classes.

3'' binder

pkg of binder rings for vocabulary

one dry erase marker

(5)  dividers

two compositions books (one for Grammar and one for Journals)

Dividers should be labeled Essays, Grammar, Handouts, Quizzes/Tests, Novels

MAKE-UP WORK

District policy will be followed for make-up work. Students are allowed the number of days absent in which to turn in make-up work. The responsibility of obtaining make-up work lies with the student. Tests will be made up before or after school for students with excused absences—please see me to make arrangements.

LATE WORK

Late work will be accepted under the following conditions:
1 day late = a 70 *(or lower after graded)
2 days late= 50 *(or lower after graded)

3 days late= 0
* (or lower after graded) means that incomplete assignments turned in on day 2 or 3 may be lower than 70 or 50

CLASS WORK

1. Most of our work will be done in class and turned in for a grade.

2. Each student’s work will be kept in his/her portfolio.

ASSIGNMENT SHEET

The assignment sheet is where students will record their daily assignments, as well as upcoming quizzes, tests, projects, etc. This is part of the notebook and will aid the student with organization.

GRADE RECORD SHEET

All grades will be posted on the Grade Record Sheet by the student as well as averaged on a continuous basis. The student is expected to keep this sheet current and obtain a parent signature every three-week and six-week period.  This sheet is also part of their notebook and will serve as a means of communication between school and home.

HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY

Homework should not be looked at as simply a way to satisfy grade requirements, but rather as an opportunity to practice and eventually master what is being taught; it is an opportunity to take risks and make mistakes.  If work is not up to what a student should master, students will be given the chance to redo all required work.  The essence of class/homework is to make sure my students are learning and understanding the material throughout the year.

That being said, I will try my very best to limit the amount of homework that goes home with students.

ASSESSMENTS

All assignments receive equal weight in the grade book unless otherwise noted in advance. If an assignment or project is to be counted as more than one grade, it will be stated in writing as part of the instructions or guidelines.

Students will earn a grade based on the following categories:

1.  Notebook organization of completed class work

2.  Vocabulary entries that are complete and thorough

3.  Class Participation

4.  Novel Worksheets

5.  Quizzes, tests, and projects

6.  Homework

7.  Journals

CONFERENCES

If you would like to contact me, you may call the school at 231-2200 or email me.  Please allow at least 24-hour notice for a conference. My conference period is Monday through Thursday  am.

PARENTS

You can help your child in several ways:

  • Know what your child’s assignments are by checking the Assignment Sheet. This page is filled out in class daily and is a recording of assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.
  • Look over completed work (homework, quizzes, and tests) and ask your child questions about what they are learning..
  • Encourage your child to attend after school tutoring or go to the Homework Center. Times, teachers’ names, and room numbers will be posted.
  • Certain novels require some help and I will attach links that can be used as a resource at home.
This six weeks we are reading A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
This new style of writing is new to our students therefore I have provided some links to help them with the language.  These are the two that I favor but feel free to search the web and find ones that suit you.  Happy Holidays
Parents/Student: If you have costumes that we could use this six weeks I would appreciate it.
