Hello everyone! Thank you for your interest in our website! All of our projects and activities throughout the course of the semester have resulted in the development of an after school cooking program for all students at Teach Cre8tivity Elementary School. We as fourth grade teachers have come together to implement this club for children to give them a holistic approach to cooking. Included in this fabulous new program, we have decided to provide our students with knowledge of the multitude of aspects pertaining to food. For more information regarding our program please feel free to visit our podcast that is attached below. Our new program will not only benefit the students, but also the community. As a part of our program, students will be learning how to cook for large numbers of people. They will then apply this new knowledge of mass cooking to create a meal for the people of the Gospel Mission of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
A large part of our program involves the integration of technology into the lessons we teach. Technology is something that cannot be avoided and is becoming more and more part of our daily lives and routines. Therefore, we deem it necessary to educated our students about certain aspects about technology that can also help them in the kitchen. We will be teaching them things such as; how to research for things on the Internet, how to collect data on a spreadsheet and graph it, and also creating podcasts and digital stories that are pertinent to cooking amongst many other things. We developed our cooking program around the concept of project-based learning. Project-based learning is a hands-on way of learning where students can collaborate and use technology to answer inquires that they have about real-life situations. It allows students to take the authentic approach and things that are of value and interest to them to be a successful contributor to their community. Our classroom kitchen teaches the students lessons across all of the academic subjects. This program engages students in a way that interests them as well as satisfying the state standards for curriculum. We have included all of the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) standards and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards within two links. Our first set of standards come from both the Michigan GLCES and ISTES. The second link houses the remaining Michigan GLCES. Over the course of the development of this program, we have all collaborated over a blog. This blog helped us stay connected and on the same page about aspects of our project. It was a wonderful way for us to share ideas and tips with each other and the professionals that have contributed to our program. A link to our blog is below.
