PETE & C 2009: We had been to Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo & Conference at Hershey’s Chocolate factory in February 2009. It is a statewide event that provides quality programs focused on technology in the educational field! Each year, hundreds of exhibitors showcase their latest technology products and services to the vast audience of teachers, administrators, technology directors, school board members and more. There are keynote speakers that educate and inspire you. There are various different tutorials held to teach and familiarize teachers and everyone else in the conference with the growing technology. This conference showed us the amount of research and efforts already being put in the field of education and technology by the experts. For more details on PETE & C please click here.Meeting Mara and team at the conference: Mara and others at IU1 met us at the conference to discuss the progress of the project. At that time they expressed their desire to have us make a game to help teachers teach in the class.Meeting with Eben Myers: The Team went to ETCETRA to meet Eben Myers to discuss the possible options to make a game and to meet client’s needs. Eben told us that advert game is the way to go for this project as we are trying to advertise that games can also be used for education. He gave us some nice examples on the concept of advert games. Spring Break: Over all of the spring break the team was busy making the game. The game was basically to teach physics to the players with experience. We decided to make a game on Newton’s law of motion which say F=ma. The main idea was not to make the user calculate the values but use trial and error method to get the right answer. Visiting the schools: While developing the idea we wanted to meet the teachers, talk to them about what are their difficulties, what do they think about the games as educational tools. So we visited two schools. One of them was Winchester Thurston School which was very close to our campus. We explained them about our project and then also told them about playtesting. Then we went to Cannonburgh Middle School. Here we spoke to teachers to know their opinion about games. Surprisingly, they told us they would like to use games as an educational tools but they were not aware of available games. Change of idea: After meeting the teachers we decided to change the idea. Even during half presentations faculty gave us same feedback i.e. we need to revamp the idea. We decided to go back to our original idea of making a website which will contain all the information about games in education. This website contains links to other games that can be used to teach, research papers and other links to conferences. Meeting with Mara: We met Mara the following week after GDC i.e. the last week of March. We explained her our new idea and also why we decided to change our idea. She was convinced with the fact that there are many games out there and we need to make them easily available to the teachers rather than making a game which could be just like other ones. Soft Opening: Soft is on Friday the 24th. Please check back for more updates. |
