Slabtown - In the latter half of the nineteenth century, wood harvested from the region was hauled to saw mills in Traverse City to create boards to ship to ports around the Great Lakes. As trees were run through the saws scrap wood was created. These slabs of scrap wood were used by workers to construct homes in the area south and west of Grand Traverse Bay and so, this area of town came to be known as Slabtown.
This page has been created and is maintained by the Slabtown Neighborhood Association for the benefit of its members and our neighbors in the Traverse City, Michigan community.
