Accessible Formats

Books are becoming more immediately accessible to all through a growing pool of online resources.  Accessible formats available via internet and mail include: paper braille and braille files for refreshable braille; audiobooks (in DAISY format for easy navigation by chapter and page); and electronic text (easily enlarged to the best print-size and contrast for you from your computer.)

You may be eligible for free membership to Bookshare, a growing resource for book downloads in  DAISY and BRF formats.

Project Gutenberg has many texts available for free download.

Learning Ally (formerly known as RFB&D): 

Many students receive high school and college textbooks from Learning Ally.  Your school might have a membership or you may purchase one.

Iowa Braille Downloads

This is a list of children’s books that are ready to download and emboss in braille.  Request specific titles from your TBVI and they can be embossed for reading at home.

Texas School for the Blind  has a long list of links to electronic text and braille files to be downloaded and brailled.

Audible.comis a commercial website that sells books for download.

Seedlings is a resource of free braille books to keep, sent by mail.  Seedlings will also send brailled Encyclopedia articles for free.

Books for beginning readers of all ages can be found at Tar Heel Reader.
