Health Data Management News Article
May 12th 2010

Identity Theft and the substantial increased cost of experiencing a data breach are causing the medical community to re-evaluate the security and awareness of Patient Health Information.

Recently there have been new developments relating to medical ID theft, fraud, and patient information.

Many are implementing programs to deter and detect medical identity theft.
(See Here)

Many are implementing Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training (FWA) for entities that participate in Medicare Part C or Part D.  (See Here)

There are also federal and state breach notification laws requiring formal individual and governmental notification in the event of qualifying breaches or compromise of sensitive information. Your organization could also be required to notify the media of a HIPAA breach!   (See Here)

Have you dealt proactively with these issues?  We assist health care organizations in all of these areas at NO COST.

Changing employee thinking on these issues is essential to minimizing the potential cost, negative publicity, and fines associated with a breach.  Most information breaches (88%) are due to employee error. This significant source of practice liability can be reduced with effective, comprehensive employee training about identity theft and breach prevention.

Medical entities are increasingly being targeted by individuals (See Breach List) looking for opportunities to obtain sensitive information such as SSN, driver's license numbers, insurance information, DOB, and much more.

The impacts to victims of medical identity theft are severe. They include financial, emotional, and reputational harm as well as inaccurate medical records (e.g. wrong blood type or allergies) that can lead to improper care and even death. This can translate to significant liability for the medical practice to which the theft or breach is found to have originated, especially if the proper training, awareness, and documentation is not in place.

Every precaution should be taken (above and beyond HIPAA) to prevent a breach from occurring. TBG's unique employee training program for health care is engaging, informative, comprehensive, enjoyable, and completely free for most health care practices nationwide!
