JUL CO, WFDF WORLD OVERALL 2011 - FT COLLINS, July 18-23 JUL CO, KISS THE SKY - DDC - ASPEN, July 8, 9, 10 APR VA, 35th ANNUAL VIRGINIA STATES OVERALL, April 15, 16, 17 March 2011: 5th ANNUAL TALLAHASSEE DDC TOURNAMENT Tallahassee, FL, March 12, 2011, Jim Elsner - organizer Tourney Highlights: 10 players were seeded and a king of the court (KOC) format, suggested by Cade Loving, was used and found to provide a nice normalization of play across participants. After the 11 rounds, the lowest seded player, Josh Boyd, tied with Jim Elsner for the best overall record! Although Josh had never played DDC before, he threw accurately with lots of spin (and it was his birthday - but he earned it all, no gifts!). Afternoon play featured top 8 players in an elimination championship bracket, best of 3 games. John Elsner and Hank Bass defeated Josh Boyd and Jim Elsner in the finals, 2-1. Flight delays caused father-daughter team Elsner to miss the mixed DDC games, but they played a lot of pickup games and had great fun. Didi Elsner brings home the WFDF Silver Medal in Queen of the Court in her first road tourney! The afternoon brought variable and often gusty winds for the start of DDC. With a great field of players - many world champs, highly ranked players, and the return of Scott Zimmerman, making the semis was no given. Through pool action there were only a few seed busting teams, see the statistics links above for more details. In the Women’s action, there were only two full teams. Lori Daniels and Bethany Sanchez were able to take the title, defeating Beth Verish and Susie Horn in straight games. The eight team round robin continued from Thursday’s action to Friday morning. The better wind conditions saw the top four seeds hold on to set up the semis. Top seed Harvey Brandt and Dave Hesselberth (flying in only for DDC) finished on top and chose to play Mark Horn and Scott Zimmerman. Harvey and Dave survived a spirited effort to win two of the three games. Second seeded Conrad Damon and Carlton Howard (also flying in only for the DDC) took two very close games (two point margins in both) to defeat third seeded John and Cody Kirkland. The first rounds of Open DDC had familiar faces as well. Conrad Damon (#1 in the world) and Tony Pellicane came out seeded number one, followed by Harvey Brandt and Rick Lebeau. In the semis, Conrad and Tony will play newer faces Hank Bass and Mike Prost (from Tallahassee). Harvey and Rick will play Dave Hesselberth and Johan Josjo. Stina Persson and Regina Olnils will play Lori Daniels and Tita Ugalde in the Women’s DDC final. As mentioned, a great turnout of new faces to major DDC competition. Especially from the Tallahassee, Florida, pod just 2.5 hours down the road. Three teams mostly based in that town were in the top ten. And a coed Juniors team (Elsners [Ian and Di]) from Tally made the second round. ...
