Digital Being

Digital Being

My art work called ‘Digital Being’ is a series of interactive sculptures based on my fictional ideas about creatures, who develop consciousness living in technological garbage.

I like to observe my surroundings, such as people’s behavior and social issues. With these observations, I have been making my artwork. In my undergraduate career based on my subjective observation, I made a simple 3D character animation for my senior project to comprehend how people create culture and deliver it. This theme was an important question about where I was belonging and what had been affecting me. While I created the animation, I could approach a self-satisfying answer with my imagination. This is my way to understand this world and to build up my artwork.

My recent topic is the future of digital technology because not only are people living in the digital ear, it has also become an important part of life that we cannot get rid of. It sould be a good medium to understand this rapidly changing world. To find what the technology is, I am reading Negroponte’s book, Being Digital, for the third time. In his book, he mentions that we need to create artificial intelligence to make a perfect interface for communication between humans and machines. He is an M.I.T. professor, one of the leaders of technology in the world. In 2011, we are living as he described in his book in 1995. According to his book, A.I. will be the next step of the digital technology. Some scientists already made several versions of it which is not going to die and can observe our lifes continuously. I hope that the inventors can control them well. However, what if there are unkowned versions of it, which spontaneously develop consciousness, living in electronic products? There are very simple digital codes in every electronics such as a television, a speaker and a computer. Not only are the daily output of the electronic products vast globally, but also they still have the codes inside of their body, when they are thrown by as useless. What if the codes are abiogenetically combined, when they have electronic shocks or networking among them?

My art work is dealing with the moment, the spontaneous generation of the unknown A.I. in electronic garbage, which people can easily ignore. The audiences can watch their behavior near the pile of technological stuff. However, when people want to observe them closely, they stop their action or alert the approachs.
