Frequently asked questions

Synchronisation

When I delete a file from one of the sync folders, it is not deleted from the other sync folders, instead it is restored in the folder I deleted it from. Does Synkron support deleting the file in the other sync folders, rather than restoring it?

Yes. The feature is called "Propagate deletions" and it is accessible from the Advanced options of every sync tab. For more information see the documentation.

Is Synkron able to recognise collisions (conflicts) between files?

Yes. You just need to activate the option "Detect collisions" which you can find in the Advanced options of every Sync and Multisync tab. For more information see the documentation.

How does Synkron compare files to determine which is the newest one?

Synkron compares files just by their last modified dates.

I am syncing two folders. I don't want Synkron to copy any new files to the first folder, because the second one is a backup of the first and I want to keep there any files I want without getting them back to the first folder. How can I do this?

In the Advanced options of Synchronise and Multisync tabs there options called "Update existing files only", in the Synchronise section there are 3 and in the Multisync section there are 2 of them. The topmost one in the Synchronise section refers to all your sync folders. The second one in Synchronise and the first in Multisync refers to the first sync folder in Synchronise and the sources in Multisync. The last one refers to the second folder in Synchronise and the destination in the Multisync section.

These "Update existing files only" options forbid Synkron to copy any new files to the folder they are refering to. So if you don't want any new files to be copied into the first folder, you need to check the checkbox refering to that folder.

Temporary files

Synkron backs up files it has overwritten or deleted during synchronisations to allow you to restore them in case it has done something you didn't want it to do.

How can I restore these files?

Go to the "Restore" section (click on the "Restore" button in the toolbar), check the files you want to restore in the list and click on the "Restore" button in the bottom right part of the window.

How can I remove them?

In the "Restore" section (click on the "Restore" button in the toolbar) check the checkbox "Clean temporary files", you will see a groupbox with options to remove these files. Choose the options you want to use and click on the "Clean" buttton. For more information see the documentation.

How can I turn off backing up these files?

Activate the "Do not backup updated files" checkbox which you can find in the Advanced options. For more information see the documentation.

Where does Synkron store the backed up older versions of files it has ovewritten during synchronisations?

The files are stored in the user_folder/.Synkron folder inside folders named according to the date and time of sync of the files they contain. The files are give an extension to ensure that a folder won't contain two files with the same name. To manipulate with these files (restore, or remove them) use the Restore section.

How can I change the folder where Synkron keeps the temporary files?

In the menu bar go to the menu "Options" and click on the option "Change temporary folder path". Enter the new path where you want Synkron to store the backed up files.

How to use Synkron as a portable application?

To run Synkron as a portable application for use on a portable media, you will need to make a few adjustments:
  • After installing the ordinary Synkron executable to your portable drive, create an empty file named "Synkron.ini" in the folder where you have installed Synkron. Synkron will use this file for storing internal settings.
  • You will need to change the path of the folder where Synkron stores temporary files (backed up files that were deleted or overwritten during synchronisations) to a folder that exists or can be created on all computers Synkron is going to be used on. To change this path, open Synkron and in the menu Options in menu bar click on "Change temporary folder path" and enter a new path for storing backed up files (e.g. "C:/Synkron-temp"). If you don't want Synkron to back up deleted and overwritten files, check the option "Do not backup update files" in Advanced menu in your sync tabs.
Synkron should now function correctly from a portable device.
