BUILDING PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE
BPI Standards have been crafted with one important fact in mind: The house is a system and everything is connected. The relationship between all interconnected systems of the house is the key to its overall performance, efficiency, and durability. Moreover, home performance is essential to the health, safety, and comfort of occupants. Certified BPI professionals are trained to quickly target, diagnose, and solve household performance problems such as mold, mildew, ice dams, drafts, and high utility bills to name a few.
· BPI Building Analyst (BA) – This five-day Building Analyst course will teach you basic principles of building science to assess energy efficiency in a home while also monitoring conditions that have a direct impact on human health and safety. BPI Standards emphasize the 'house-as-a-system' approach to inspecting a home, meaning that all systems are interconnected from the HVAC equipment, to the envelope, the foundation, walls, roof, doors and windows. You will learn how to use diagnostic equipment such as the blower door and the combustion analyzer to ensure systems are functioning together correctly to maximize home performance, comfort, energy efficiency, safety and durability. An energy auditor with BPI certification gives homeowners peace of mind knowing the professional meets the national standards of the Building Performance Institute having passed both a written and a hands-on field exam. Registration fee - $1,695.00
· BPI Envelope Professional (EP) for Building Analysts - This three-day Envelope Professional training is only available to people who have attended the Building Analyst course. Topics covered in the Building Analyst course will be reviewed, and new material concerning responsibilities of a weatherization crew leader will be covered, as well. The training will conclude with the standard BPI Envelope Professional written test and in-field test--including combustion safety testing--thus resulting in the Envelope Professional certification if both tests are completed successfully. Registration fee - $1,095.00
BPI Heating Professional for Building Analyst - This four-day Heating Professional trainnig is intended for those who have attended a Building Analyst training and want to expand their professional development into optimizing the performance of heating equipment to help save energy and ensure occupant comfort, health and safety. This includes, but limited to: Heating System Science, Load & Sizing, Distribution System Design, Combustion Safety Science, Ducted System Diagnostics, Combustion Gas Analysis, Duct Repair & Sealing, Combustion Appliance Vent Repair, Ventilation System Installation, Heating Appliance Clean & Tune, Gas Oven Clean & Tune, Controls and Electrical Inspection, Heat Exchanger Inspection and CAZ Testing. Registration fee - $1,395.00
NEW! BPI Residential Building Envelope Accessible Areas Air Leakage Control Installer – this four-day training will utilize classroom and hands-on training techniques with the use of life-size props how to implement measures to tighten the building envelope to reduce energy loss from air leakage and also reduce pollutants and allergens through air migration. Improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency through the proper installation of dense-pack insulation materials. Registration fee - $1,395.00
MANUAL J DEVELOPMENT TRAINING
This three-day class on ACCA's Manual-J is the first step of the HVAC design process. This process ensures that the designer understands the true energy needs of a building, so that a properly sized system can be selected. Due to the presence of new building materials, advanced insulation systems, solar design strategies, and efficient ventilation systems, it's impossible to use rule-of-thumb sizing methods and achieve accurate results.
Whether you're an HVAC contractor, an energy auditor, or a HERS rater, this class will provide you a better understanding of proper system sizing and the implications of doing things the "wrong" way. You'll leave this class familiar with Wrightsoft software, enabling you to easily perform load calculations for yourself or your clients.
Students must bring their own laptop, as you'll be using a demo copy of Wrightsoft software to do in-class and homework problems. After completing a Manual J training hosted by People Incorporated, students will have the option to purchase the Wrightsoft Manual J + Drawings software at a discounted price of $499.00 for 90 days. This is a $376.00 discount. Registrion fee - $795.00 12.25 BPI & RESNET CEUs available
Intro to HVAC Diagnostics
|
This course focuses on efficient HVAC systems for residential construction. It covers system types, HVAC-related building physics, and testing protocols. The course is directed toward an audience that is familiar with residential construction techniques and terminology, and is primarily intended for builders who would like to become more knowledgeable about HVAC system options. Interested homeowners and other subcontractors who have familiarity with construction terminology may also benefit from attending. It will also cover the basics of home performance analysis, prioritizing and developing appropriate scopes of work, implementing the corrective measures, and “testing out” to ensure occupant safety. Topics will include an overview of the BPI standards, materials and installation details of common retrofit solutions, including detailed information about HVAC system diagnostics and repair, crawlspace encapsulation techniques, window replacements, ventilation systems, and more!
Registration fee - $795.00 11.25 BPI & RESNET CEUs available. |
HOME ENERGY RATING SYSTEM RATER
This class prepares individuals in becoming certified HERS Raters. Class instruction includes how to evaluate the energy performance and comfort of a house through comprehensive, whole house diagnostic procedures. The class is a 6-day training program, meeting the national standard for training and certification for energy raters as adopted by RESNET. The online HERS Rater exam is given on the last day of class, and is included in the registration fee. Concepts participants will learn:
A basic understanding of building science principles and home construction
A basic understanding of the principles of heat, air and moisture transfer
Ability to diagnose air leakage, comfort and indoor air quality problems
Ability to produce accurate and unbiased Home Energy Ratings, from building plans for new homes and from field inspection of existing homes
Ability to produce a complete home energy analysis using Rem/Rate™ software Ability to perform field inspections and diagnostics using the blower door and duct leakage testing equipment
An Understanding of the services and responsibilities of a HERS Rater and Provider
How to potentially create or expand your business using home comfort, HERS and diagnostics procedures.
HERS Ratings are required for EnergyStar certification and EnergyStar certification is required for certification in many residential green buildinng rating systems including LEED for Homes, EarthCraft House and HealthyBuilt Homes and for Bronze or higher in NAHB National Green Building Program.

Advanced Combustion Safety Testing
The advanced combustion safety course will address more complex combustion safety issues. Students will be given advanced problems and solutions. The average combustion safety analyst knows how to address a simple house. This course is designed to address those issues not normally covered in other trainings like, fireplaces, woodstoves, venting issues, and HVAC systems that do not have a fan only option at the thermostat, or have a fan only option but it does not work. The class will focus on these complex issues by utilizing real life examples in the classroom as well as in field practice. Registration fee - $795.00 12.25 BPI & RESNET CEUs available.
