Rás na mBán - 5th County Rider for Laura

posted 24 Nov 2011 07:12 by Peter Doyle   [ updated 24 Nov 2011 07:38 ]

Our very own Laura Banfield rode the ladies Rás back in September as part of the Women's Cycling team. Showing that hard work and training pays off, Laura secured 5th county rider for herself.

With 6 stages to complete, including a TT and a lot of QOM hills, the race was a tough one with a route which anyone would fear. In the final few stages, Laura saw herself in a battle for 5th county rider with an Orwell rider and managed to secure the placing by some 3 minutes, finishing 28th overall.

In the county competition, the team cleaned up taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place.

Congratulations to Swords rider Vanessa Fenton who took the win in a two up sprint for the line.

Report by Laura Banfield.

In the second of a two race series, Vanessa pipped Karen Robinson to the line in a very close sprint whilst Caroline Martinez showed her consistency by placing third for the second time.

Vanessa takes a close sprint

With the racing season drawing to a close, it was great to see so many ladies out for the final race of the McNally Swords Ladies League. The race was run over 3 laps of a 10km circuit with 3 groups starting, a few of which were taking part in their first road race.

Limit set off 2.5 minutes ahead of semi scratch who were off 1.5 minutes ahead of scratch.

Limit split early with 3 riders keen to stay away; Marianne Checkley, Siobhan Moore and Martina Smith. They pulled away from the rest of the limit group but SS were hot on their heels with Caroline Martinez (Orwell) and Clodagh Myers (u/a) driving the pace from the start line. Impressively, semi scratch caught the rear split of limit within the first lap and the remainder just after the start of the second lap.

Marian Hughes leads the limit group

Towards the end of lap two the three groups came together when scratch riders Vanessa (Swords CC) and Karen Robinson (u/a) caught the leaders. The bunch was now made up of the 4 remaining semi scratch, the 2 scratch and 3 limit riders had who managed to grab onto their wheel. There was a sprint prize up for grabs at the end of lap 2 and the only two underage riders of the race Caoimhe Ivory (Bray) and Naoise Sheridan (Orwell) sprinted for the prime leaving the rest of the bunch standing. It was close, but 15 year old Bray Wheelers rider, Caoimhe, took the sprint. Seeing as the underage riders must ride on restricted gears, this is a very impressive result.

The kick by the girls also split the bunch, so going into the final lap the group was down to Vanessa, Karen, Clodagh and Caroline. The girls worked well together until the 2 scatch riders upped the pace for the last 4km.

Caroline Martinez (left) and Clodagh Myers (right) in semi scratch

It came down to a close sprint finish with Vanessa just grabbing first place ahead of Karen, while 30 seconds behind, Caroline attacked the remaining rider of the group Cloddagh, 400 meters from the finish line to take third.

Showing determination, the rear split of the limit group with Maeve Hughes (Fingal Tri), Suzanne Barron (Fingal Tri) and Lyndsay Davis (u/a) worked hard to stay together for the first 2 laps of the race. They were then caught by Ciara Robinson (u/a) and Aoife Sheridan (Orwell) and stayed together until the final sprint for the line.

McNally Swords would like to thank all the riders for supporting the two races, and all the marshals and drivers and ambulance for your help on both nights. We would also like to thank the sponsors of the prizes; High 5 (Derek Humphries) and Hazels food store. Finally, thank you to Brendan Culleton for the photography.

Race 1: Report

posted 18 Aug 2011 06:09 by Peter Doyle

Thank you to Mary Crosbie of Fingal Tri for the report.

So Year 2 of the Ring Commons Ladies Race organised by Bernie Mc Nally was coming up in August on the 9th and 23rd. I had written them off as I was planning on being away. As it happened I was around last Tuesday but had totally forgotten that it was on.

Upon checking my e-mail while trying to decide what training I was going to do that night I saw Bernie's e-mail detailing the plan for later and my decision was made. I cycled up and of course was running late (gently reminded by Tiny Dave as he roared out the window of his car on the way past!). I landed at the start line with literally 1 minute to spare. All non-racing ladies such as myself were sent off first with the more experienced ladies 2 minutes later.

From the onset Lisa Boardman and myself worked really together. This drafting crack is a whole new discovery to me and I am still trying to get over the nerves of cycling so close to someone while travelling up to 40km an hour. It's amazing the distances that you can cover like this. Anyway we're working away well together. Thanks to the marshals we knew that we were a nice bit ahead and so we were pushing as hard as we could. I was really glad that I had cycled up as I think this got the legs well warmed up. At the final climb (mini hill!) I started to really push it and went out on my own. There is a lovely stretch just before the end where you can really get the speeds up and I went for it.

I was conscious that we still had not been passed by the racer ladies and I did start to think was it possible that I might finish before them. Then I was thinking "Don't be cracked - you'll be disappointed if you start thinking like that and then don't win"!!

I kept at it and by 300m to go I started looking behind me still expecting the racing group to pass me but there was no-one. I was so chuffed with myself. When the kids asked me later "did you win your race mammy" I did not have to lie!!! They don't take well to "it's all about the taking part"!!

Thanks a mil to Bernie for organising a great event that was well marshalled with all the supports. And of course the food afterwards was just yummy. My only regret is that I cannot take part in the second race but on the up side I will be relaxing on a beach in France! Salut!

Fingal Tri Win!

posted 10 Aug 2011 02:22 by Peter Doyle

Fingal Tri put in a great performance to take the top two spots with Mary Crosbie and Lisa Boardman in the first of the two races organised by Swords CC. Caroline Martinez (Orwell Wheelers) was the fastest lady on the night, having started in the scratch group and only narrowly missing out on catching the leaders near the finish.

Thank you to all participants and we look forward to seeing you at the next race on August 23rd.

Keep an eye on our Facebook event page for more details.

National Criterium Championships - 2011

posted 22 Jun 2011 02:03 by Peter Doyle   [ updated 22 Jun 2011 03:00 ]

Laura Banfield takes 6th place.

Here is a report from Laura...

Friday 17th June 2011
After a day of rain, the sun was shining on Mullingar for the Ladies Criterium. The ladies race was to be 25 minutes plus 2 laps over what was widely agreed as a technical course. The nature of crit racing is fast and full gas and the ladies were not to be disappointed.

After a couple of neutralised laps the pace immediately jumped high. As soon as that happened I was sure to react and jump onto the wheels in front. A short while later, I looked behind and could see that a small group of us were clear of the main bunch. There wasn't much time to think and my legs and lungs were burning already so I just dug in for as long as I could to hold the wheels in front.

Unfortunately, not too long later I lost the wheel in front. To be honest I can’t remember if it was 1 minute or 10 minutes or where it happened, my mind was in such a blur! So at this point here were 3 girls clear with myself and Sarah Piner just behind.

The three riders in front were a formidable trio of Sandra Ftizgerald (winner of the Orwell Wheelworx ladies criterium league), Fran Meehan (recently back from winning gold at the Paracycling Road World Cup) and Ciara Mulholland (a promising junior who is already winning senior races, including a recent win in the National league). The remainder of the bunch was split by chasing hard but in the end the trio’s lead was never in danger.

Sarah and I worked together a bit but she was stronger than me and eventually I couldn't stay with her pace. I rode a lot of laps alone losing energy fast! At this point I was in 5th spot but I was being reeled in. Coming into the last lap, Caroline Conway caught up with me and finished in 5th, myself in 6th.

Ciara Mulholland with her strong sprint crossed the line in first with Fran 2nd and Sandra 3rd.

In the Men’s National event, friend of Swords rider Martin Irvine took gold for the second year running. Chapeau!

The organisers, Lakeside wheelers, put on an excellent event, super atmosphere and an extremely enjoyable evening despite the pain of criterium racing.
