Playas Landsailing Event 2009

News flash! new land speed record for landsailers:
the British
Ecotricity Greenbird piloted by Ricard Jenkins  set a new speed record for landsailers today at 126.4 mph (very likely also the land speed record for all wind-powered vehicles). March 26, 2009.

The Playas Event is on for 2009!
Event dates: Thursday through Sunday April 23-26
Location;  Playas, Southern New Mexico (Map and directions)

Playas is an exciting landsailing event held annually. This is a low key, friendly, 'run what you brung" event . If the wind lets up long enough to get folks together to discuss it , we sometimes have actual races, but the theme is sail, sail, sail...then sail some more. If racing doesn't get in the way of sailing, we might do it.

All types of landsailing craft are welcome as are total beginners and long-time sailors. The Southern New Mexico events are famous for an eclectic collection of both manufactured and home-built landsailers.

Although it didn't work out this year, our Southern NM event usually coincides with the full moon for great night sailing.

If you are planning on visiting or participating in this event, be aware that Playas is very remote. The town of Playas is now operated by Playas Research and Training Center ; Gas, diesel, food and bowling are available on weekdays. "People who come to participate in your event are welcome to come to Playas (town) on weekdays to fuel up their vehicles, grab a hamburger at the grill, or pick up groceries at the convenience store." There are good, paved roads very close to the lakebed, but restaurants, motels, hospitals, water etc. are about 50m miles away. A small gas station convenience store (unleaded regular only) is sometimes open in Hatchita 15-20 miles away.
