Sweetbriar Jazz  Classic Jazz " Flyer "

Sweetbriar plays classic jazz, the great standards of Ellington, Gillespie, Parker, Monk, Davis, Coltrane, Golson, Shorter, Jobim, and the sumptuous ballads of the big band era. We play swing, bop, jazz waltz, bossa, blues, funk, and dreamy love songs.

Sweetbriar has been playing in the Philadelphia area and in South Jersey for the past three years. We have played colleges, restaurants, cultural venues, and private parties.

The players are:

• Dan Dougherty (Bass), who grew up playing Irish traditional music before discovering jazz. He provides the steady tonality and rhythm that holds the music together. Dan is a computer technician at UPenn.

• Edna   (Vocals), who specializes in warm ballads, upbeat standards, and Latin tunes in Spanish and Portuguese. Edna is a physical therapist in Delaware County, PA.

.  Howard Press (Tenor and Soprano Sax), who provides shout, growl and smooth flowing lyrical energy to the band. Howard is a Physician in Marlton, New Jersey.

.  Todd Conine Drums 

• Steve Zelnick (Keyboard), who handles arrangements, nice harmonies, and melodic and offbeat improvisations.  Steve is an English Professor at Temple U.

Sweetbriar performed at the The Jenkintown Jazz & Brewfest on Sunday, September 10th, 2006 as well as in the Media Jazzfest on October 21st, 2006.  We had a great time performing for a wonderful audience.  See the Brewfest & Jazz gallery for photos.

• Sweetbriar is always updating our recording list  off for the summer. Our thanks to friends and fans for your support and encouragement these past concerts. We will return in the Fall and have an update on the location and dates here at the website. We will email you if you ask to be added to the email list.
