Founded in 1966 on the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh, India, Sadhana Mandir Trust was established by Swami Rama as an international retreat center for sincere aspirants to practice meditation in a spiritually elevating environment.

Sadhana is the word for a student's sincere efforts along a particular path of practice toward self-realization. The word mandir simply means "house." So Sadhana Mandir means the abode of spiritual practice.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Rishikesh, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Sadhana Mandir is located on the banks of the holy river Ganges. Surrounded by beautiful flowering gardens, mango trees and a lotus pond, a quiet and serene atmosphere permeates the ashram making it ideal for sadhana.
 
Self Transformation Program

The Self Transformation Program is a highly individualized residential program leading the participant to explore the nature of his being on the level of the five koshas: physical, pranic, mental, intellectual, blissful, and finally to the center of consciousness. The participant engages in daily yoga classes, breathing and relaxation practicums, guided meditation practice, and individualized instruction in yoga science. There is also enough personal time for self study and for walks along the Ganges.

Three vegetarian meals are provided daily. Accommodation is double occupancy unless otherwise specified. The program is available in 2008 during January, April, July, and October. The first three weeks follow the schedule described on the website. The last week is allocated for individual interests (ie, sight-seeing, silence retreat, etc.). The program can be extended on a case-by-case basis.

This Program will be of tremendous interest to those familiar with Swami Rama and who want to explore the teachings and practices in greater depth. Swami Rama is widely known to have presented the deeper teachings of Yoga in extremely clear and accessible ways, and with the perspective that the goal of Yoga is nothing less than the direct experience of one's true Self (Atman, Purusha) in this very lifetime.

Meditation Retreat Programs

The ashram offers an ongoing meditation retreat program for personal renewal and deepening your meditation practice. Self-reliance is essential for this program. We provide a quiet room, vegetarian meals, morning hatha yoga classes, and suggestions to make your program enjoyable.

Duration: 3-10 days typically. Some facilitated meditation retreat programs are longer.

The Science of Joyful Living

The Science of Joyful Living is a seminar based on the teachings of Swami Rama. In this seminar, the interaction between the biological, physiological, psychological and philosophical dimensions will be explored. Harmonious integration of body, breath, mind and spirit will be reinforced through simple practicum. Devoting only a few minutes each day to these practices will allow us to enhance communication skills, improve inter-personal relationships, sharpen decision-making and manage stress effectively. Hidden potentials will be unlocked making us more creative and dynamic and allowing us to fulfill the purpose of life.

The seminar consists of several inter-related modules. Each module includes a lecture delivered using multi-media aids, a practicum and time for interaction with the faculty. The seminar can be tailored into a one or two day seminar and can be customized to the needs of a particular group or organization.

The Himalayan Tradition of Meditation

This course offers step-by-step essential instructions to begin one’s practice. Each class includes a guided meditation experience. Meditation is a specific technique for resting the mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state. The daily practice of meditation leads to a state of tranquility, and with continued practice, to the knowledge of one’s essential nature.
