The Twelve Elves
(Story submitted by Aneri Shah)

Once upon a time, there was a Cobbler and his wife who lived in a village. They were very poor and sometimes, had nothing to eat. The Cobber was an old and weak, so he could not do much work. It took him almost two-three days to make a pair of shoes. The Cobbler worked in his workshop outside his hut.

One day, the Cobbler sat in his workshop making shoes. His wife came there and said, "Listen, please try to make more pair of shoes as we are running out of money. If we do not get money, we will not be able to get leather nor food for us." The Cobbler did not say anything. That evening, he could manage to cut leather in the workshop and went inside his house. He took his dinner and went to sleep.

Next morning, the cobbler woke up early. On entering his workshop, he saw two pairs of Mojris (shoes) lying on the shelf. He was amazed and wondered who had made these shoes. The Cobbler sold the two pairs of Mojris for double the usual prize as it was very attractive. He could get more leather out of the money.

In the evening, he cut the leather for four pairs of Mojris and went for dinner. He was very tired and went to sleep. In the morning, he woke up and went to the Workshop. He got a surprize again as he saw four pairs of shoes on the shelf. They were in different colors and with unique embroidery. He showed these Mojris to his wife and told her about the miracles on how the cutted leather was transformed to beautiful Mojris. The wife was very happy and thought, "We can now sell these Mojris and get more money. However, let us find out who is helping us."

It was midnight and the clock struck twelve. There was a miracle as twelve Elves came out from the clock and started working on the leather. They had no proper clothes on their body but they made lovely pair of shoes with their tiny fingers. The wife was very happy to see them working. She told the Cobbler, "Please get some clothes for them. They are working very hard and are helping us. It is our duty to bring good clothes for them."

The Cobbler went to the market in the morning and got twelve tiny, lovely clothes for the Elves. After dinner, before going to sleep, the Cobbler and his wife went to the workshop and left the lovely clothes beside the leather for the Elves. At night, the clock struck twelve and the twelve Elves came silently to the workshop. They saw the lovely clothes and were very excited. Immediately, they put on the dresses and started dancing and singing, "Cobbler is kind and we like him, he is happy and so are we....."

Finally, the Elves disappeared one day leaving behind many many pairs of shoes in all different styles. The Cobbler ad his wife lived happily ever after.

Moral : We should be Kind, caring and helpful to others. "Do good to others and others do good to you."
