Bill Graves |
"The Voice Behind the Backstop" by Rev. Bill Graves We all need the support of that voice, that wing extended as a bridge inviting us to join in realizing our potential, in blessing the world. I encountered that voice growing up in Walla Walla and many years later in Mount Vernon. I return in gratitude to my dear SUUF friends.
Rev. Bill Graves is minister of the Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Between 2007-09, he served as ministerial intern at SUUF. In January 2011, he was ordained as a UU minister and commenced his ministry in Tacoma. |

This is our second "5th Sunday" of the church year which means that it is memberled and brings a thought-provoking topic to the table. Do you remember when Jack Nicholson found Morgan Freeman's wish list on the hospital room floor in the 2008 movie, "The Bucket List"? Today we will make a stab at forming our own bucket lists, and share some of our thoughts with others |

"Always, Always Something Sings"
A birdsong in midwinter. A thread in the labyrinth. A rose in the desert. There are so many metaphors for that mysterious truth, echoed in all ages and places, that the voice of Love is always calling to us. How do we discern that voice, pay attention to it, find the courage to respond? |

"Is Humanity Improving?"
Is humanity truly going "onward and upward forever," or is humanity fundamentally and irreparably flawed? Steven Pinker's optimistic view of humanity's future and Chris Hedges' pessimistic one can both be backed up by data and historical evidence. What does our UU faith tell us about humanity's potential for both good and evil?

“Freedom Is Daily”: At Passover, we remember the Exodus of the Israelites from servitude in Egypt. Freedom, as poet Adrienne Rich reminds us, is not a one-time thing. It is daily. We can gain strength from this ancient tale of liberation as we confront those who would impose a theocracy upon our nation.

“But Who Do You Say that I Am?”
Jesus asked his followers this question, and we have been asking and answering it ever since. Who do Unitarian Universalists say that Jesus is? Why it matters, why it’s a meaningful question, and how we can answer with conviction and love in our hearts.

"How to Empty Your Backpack" As we live, from time to time we experience pain inflicted by others. Some of us carry and nurse those wounds and weigh ourselves down with anger, blame, shame, or guilt, amongst other emotions. The religious traditions, psychology and plain old common sense tell us, that it is ourselves that we injure, and it just makes good sense to let go and forgive – ourselves or someone else. How to do it? Now that’s the question. Let’s take a look. |

Atheism is increasingly popular -- and atheists increasingly outspoken -- worldwide. Are those who place blind faith in the morally neutral disciplines of reason and science as dangerous as the religious fundamentalists they condemn?
