This Month's Challenge: Garden Community

Sandra, Duane, Julianna, and Sonya share a 40 feet by 48 feet rectangular portion of the community garden, called Strawberry Fields, in their neighborhood. Within this space, each has their own rectangular garden plot.

Sandra is the only one with a square plot. Its area is 1/2 the area of Duane's.
The area of Sandra's plot is 2/3 the area of Julianna's garden. Their plots have one side in common.

Sonya's garden has an area twice that of Julianna's garden.
What are the dimensions (length and width) of each person's garden plot?

6th Grade Pre-Algebra

During the  first few weeks of March, we are working on ratios, proportions and percents.

The most common mistake students make in dealing with fractions is not reducing their fractions.  It is SO important that they know their multiplication facts so they can simplifying their fractions.

As I have told many parents, 6th grade is a tough year mathematically for students.  Hang on.  Most feel like 7th grade is easier than 6th.  This is most likely because  they are a wealth of information that will serve as a foundation for Algebra.
7th Grade Algebra I

7th graders are working on linear equations.  We are first looking at  ordered pairs as relations.  We will then move into graphing linear equations.  This will probably be the hardest unit they have done all year.
I would encourage them all to make sure they are paying attention in class and using their textbooks as a resource for examples.

With 7th grade Math being first hour, I sometimes think some of them are still waking up.

8th Grade Algebra I

For 8th grade, we are working on solving inequalities.  As we began this lesson, many students thought it was easy and basically review.  It will continue to get more difficult as they are finding solutions to compound inequalities and absolute value inequalities.

This class has a lot of energy so they need to make sure they are focussing during class time so they are able to understand their assignment.
