The Silviculture Site Cycle

Your task is to create a PowerPoint Presentation that illustrates the various parts of the Site Cycle in BC Forest Operations. You may work in pairs to produce this presentation.
Use Google to search for information. I can also be a source of information for you. Do not spend too long looking, ask me and I will help you!
The slides on your PowerPoint presentation should include the following:

  1. What is a Pre-Harvest Silviculture Prescription?
  2. What are the four main Silviculture systems practiced in BC?  What are the benefits and drawbacks of each system?
  3. How are trees felled in BC?  What are the dangers associated with falling trees?
  4. What is meant by the term “Bucking”?
  5. What is Yarding?  How is timber yarded by:
    1. Grapple yarder
    2. Highlead system
    3. Skidder
    4. Helicopter
  6. What is a site Prescription?
  7. How is a Site prepared for planting?
  8. How are seedlings grown and prepared for planting?
  9. How are sites planted?
  10. What is Juvenile Spacing?  Why is it done?  How is it done?
  11. What is pruning?  Why is it done?  How is it done?
  12. How is fertilizing done?
  13. What is commercial thinning?
  14. What is meant by the term “Free To Grow”?

Do your best to illustrate each slide with photos.  Keep a list of all resources you have used to gather information.
