 City Assignment

CITY PROJECT – THROUGHOUT THE THIRD TERM STUDENTS WILL BE WORKING ON THE “CITY PROJECT” with the intent of using the five themes of geography to illustrate the interactions between humanity and the world God has created.
Additions to this project will change at the “whim” of the instructor as the term progresses.

Opening Day Survey

The Five Themes of Geography – 
First, complete the questions 3-1 on the Edmonton Powerpoint to understand the Five themes of Geography.  Power Point Edmonton    3-1
Then construct a Powerpoint or Prezi related to the Five themes of Geography for the city you have chosen:
Relative Location
Absolute Location
Nature of Place (landforms, weather vegetation,  human features urban amenities, culture, language religion etc.
Movement: Chief methods of how imports and exports were moved; ideas, people etc.
Regions: Physical, economic rural etc.
Human and Environmental Interaction: How did the environment influence the place and how did people influence the environment?

Weather  - Monitor weather data for your city – from February 1st.  Weather data should be kept in a table format – totals, averages etc.  – Suggestion: Use an Excel spreadsheet

News - Catalogue and Summarize articles regarding the environment, urbanization etc.

Water Resources – Include a section in your presentation on water resources – this should include rivers, amount of rainfall, reservoirs, water conservation or preservation, recycling, reducing and reusing initiatives.  Water recreation sources should also be included as should water pollution or water quality issues for your city.  Example Sydney – salinization plant.

Cultural Geography – What is distinct about the culture of your city or area?  
What religions, customs and sports dominate your city?  
Display maps and or pictures related to culture.  For example, churches near the downtown center can be displayed on a map of the downtown area?  

Emmigrate to your favourite city – to do this you will need to do some research.   Check out the main jobs available in the want ads – be sure to check the internet.  Also check out the training that you would need to get for the top listed jobs in your city ie. Years of university, college, trade school required, experience etc.  

.     How about housing?  Where will you live and what would it cost you compared to Victoria?  Illustrate slides with two or three examples of prices and housing types.
