Development of Atomic Theory Presentation

For this project, you will be responsible for researching a scientist and then presenting information about his/her research to the class. The scientists listed below are in chronological order, so the presentations should flow as the story of the atom is unfolded throughout the course of presentations. Keep in mind the various ways that people learn as you present the information; include at least one type of visual: visual poster, video clip, handout, role play, …

Ø      You will need to hand in your notes (and visual) when finished your presentation.

Ø      You are also required to hand in 3 multiple choice questions (including answers). They should be well thought out and reflect the content of the presentation.

The presentation should be approximately 10 min. in length (with questions to follow).

Here’s the minimum content to include:

            1. what did he/she discover or contribute to the progression of the atomic theory

            2. how did he/she discover it – what was his general research/experimentation

            3. when & where did he/she discover it

Two class days will be given for researching, organizing your presentation, and practicing – Wednesday and Friday, May 11th and 13th.

Presentations begin in class on Monday 16 May and will probably cover 1 or 2 classes.

Here’s a list of the scientists:

Henri Becquerel
Niels Bohr
James Chadwick

*William Crookes

Marie (& Pierre) Curie
John Dalton
Paul Dirac
*J.J. Thomson

Robert Milliken

*Ernest Rutherford

*indicates that a diagram of the experiment should be shown in your presentation

Crookes – diagram the cathode ray tube

Thomson – diagram the cathode ray tube and the plum pudding model

Rutherford – diagram the Gold Foil Experiment

As you listen to others' presentations, you should take notes on 1, 2, and 3; remember that these are your notes for this history section.
