Scope and Nature of the Library CollectionCurrent
Well-rounded Sufficient Selections will be made to promote a balance between the various subject areas and to provide a wide diversity of appeal. In adding new materials, resources will be chosen to meet the developmental and maturity levels of students. Special emphasis will be given to updating and building the collection so that it will be useful for developing research skills at all grade levels. Selections for the literature program of the school should be appropriate to the general aims, desires and expectations of the Christian school community and to the general objectives of the literature curriculum as these are outlined in the school's program handbooks and course outlines. Selections will be made for curriculum and pedagogy that will be available as teacher resources.
Selection of MaterialsResponsibility: The librarian is responsible for the selection and acquisition of library resources in consultation with teachers regarding the topics covered, students' reading levels, special needs and interests, and resources recommended in curriculum guides. A partnership between teachers and the librarian is vital in establishing a library collection which supports the curriculum and will be well used. The librarian coordinates finding suitable resources, helping teachers to know what is available and assessing the merit of material on the market. Criteria: The following criteria can be used to select materials: 1) To reflect the Christian worldview that forms the foundation of the school's vision. 2) To complement the school's curriculum and to provide information in general areas of interest (both fiction and non-fiction). 3) To meet high standards of quality in content and presentation. 4) To be appropriate for age, subject area and reading level. 5) To meet high aesthetic and literary standards. 6) To consider reputation of author and publisher. 7) To consider physical format, appearance and cost (should be suited to the intended use of the resource) 8) To include literature of all genres: traditional literature, modern fantasy, historical fiction, science fiction, contemporary realism, poetry, biographies. 9) To include literature from all time periods which reflect different cultures, societies, worldviews and religions. 10) To include books by Canadian authors as well as authors from different countries.
