2011-2012 Meetings already held

Thursday 15th  September

A ‘Valedictory’ and ‘Retrospective’ by Sharon Cross at Surrey Heath Borough Council Chamber and the Museum. This is our last chance to show our appreciation of Sharon and her work while she is still Curator of the Museum. Please note the change of the day for this meeting.

Wednesday 12th October

France Hill House / Lady Southwell: an investigation by local historians. So far Lady Southwell and the house she bought in 1879 where we hold most of our meetings have escaped much investigation. This is also the period when Camberley became known as ‘Colonels Town’ or ‘Little India’. It is hoped to make amends on this.

Wednesday 9th November

‘Woking Palace’. Richard Savage has led the excavations of the last 3 years and will describe how this once manor house, founded in about 1190AD, was occupied by some of the most senior members of the English nobility for several hundred years. After the accession of Henry VII it was transformed into a palace used by all the Tudors, but especially a favourite residence of Henry VIII. Virtually the entire complex was demolished around 1625 by Sir Edward Zouch, favourite of James I and Lord of the Manor of Bagshot.

Wednesday 14th December

‘A Local Trail with Ken Clarke’ – a quiz and a virtual walk round Camberley in another age. Punch and mince pies as usual.

Wednesday 11th January

‘Fashion – the shape of men & women’ by Gill Barnes. Using the Museum’s Collection Gill will explain how it is that each fad makes us look distinctive.

Wednesday 8th February

'The Ottershaw Park Estate (1761-2011)'. by John Athersuch. This is a topic that has never been presented to our club, and should be of interest to all.

Copies of John's book will be on sale after the meeting.

The meeting originally scheduled for February - ‘A Hundred Years behind the Times – a History of Bisley in Surrey’ by Tim Price - has been postponed because of problems with the publication of Tim's new book, the first history of the village for over 100 years. To be re-arranged

Wednesday 14th March

‘Road, Rail & Royalty’ - the history of Bagshot by Mary Bennett. Mary has never presented this power-point to the club before. It comes with the usual clarity of observation and excellent selection of pictures.

Wednesday 11th April

‘Reflections on the life and work of Alf Tarry’ by Alan Meeks and Mike Hillman. This will include a DVD showing of St Barbara’s Church, Deepcut, which illustrates his passion for photography and local history. Long term members may remember his impressive slide dissolves using 2 / 4 projectors with recorded commentary and musical background.
