The Sisters of Saint Ann are now pleased to welcome courteous guests of all faiths to stay with us in our convent. We ourselves are from Brazil, though we are linguistically and culturally Ukrainian. We were brought to Rome by a refugee from a Soviet gulag, Cardinal Josef Slipyj, to welcome especially Ukrainian pilgrims and refugees.

Location:

Our convent faces directly onto the Piazza Madonna dei Monti, which is just off of Via Cavour (where it intersects with Via dei Serpenti) and is a one-minute walk from the Cavour Metro stop.

Advantages and charms of our location:

A glance at a map of Rome will show that our location is wonderfully convenient: we are very close to the Coliseum and the heart of ancient Rome, we are even closer to a Metro stop and several bus lines, and we are only a pleasant walk away from Trastevere and the Pantheon. (The center of Rome is remarkably compact.)

Further knowledge of the city is necessary to grasp that we are in one of the few remaining neighborhoods of “old Rome.” Our piazza is lively both night and day, and is much more like the shared living room of the neighborhood than a tourist center.

A wide choice of good restaurants is available within the shortest of walks, from simple and traditional places, like “Vecchia Roma” and “Osteria della Suburra,” to more charming spots with outdoor tables and excellent menus, like “Mario’s” and “Gli Angeletti.”

There is also an abundance of places offering excellent Italian snacks, like “pizza a taglio” and “suppli,” and pleasant coffee bars for cappuccino in the morning and, perhaps, Campari and soda in the afternoon. There are also several establishments where one can use the internet for a modest charge, and there is a Laundromat on Via Cavour.

Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, made for the funeral monument for Julius II, is a gem in our neighborhood; Santa Maria Maggiore is only a five minute walk away.

For a good look at our neighborhood, consult http://maps.google.com/ and search for Piazza Madonna dei Monti, Rome, Italy. Going to “street view” will give you a good look at the neighborhood. Find the intersection of Via dei Serpenti and Via Leonina: our convent is just 100 feet up Via dei Serpenti from this intersection, in the piazza with the graceful Renaissance fountain by della Porta.

Facilities:

Our rooms are neat, clean, and plain. All rooms have a bathroom, small desk, wardrobe, nightstand, window, and phone; none has either a television or air conditioning. We have singles and doubles.

How to arrive:

From the main airport, Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci):

By train: There is a train (“the Leonardo Express”) that runs from a small station directly opposite “Terminal C” at the airport and proceeds nonstop to the Termini train station. The cost per person was 11 Euro in 2009. From the station, follow the directions given below to proceed from the station to our convent.

By taxi: Drivers should know how to get to Piazza Madonna dei Monti, but if they do not, saying “Via Cavor e Via dei Serpenti,” or “l’incrocio fra Via Cavour e Via dei Serpenti” should do the trick. Referring to the Cavour stop on the Metro will get you very close.

From the main train station in Rome (Termini):

On foot: Come directly out of the station, turn left onto Via Cavour, and walk 15 minutes downhill to Via dei Serpenti (on your right, just after the Cavour Metro stop). Our piazza, with a Renaissance fountain as its landmark, is one hundred yards up Via dei Serpenti on your right. Our convent faces the fountain and is just to the right of the church with the white façade; the writing over the doorway is in Ukrainian.

By Metro: Buy a Metro ticket and enter the station for “Linea B.” Take the Metro in the direction of the Cavour Metro stop; it will be your first stop. Exit the station and cross Via Cavour. Walk downhill and turn right onto Via dei Serpenti. Our piazza, with a Renaissance fountain as its landmark, is one hundred yards up Via dei Serpenti on your right. Our convent faces the fountain and is just to the right of the church with the white façade; the writing over the doorway is in Ukrainian.
