SUPPORTIVE EMPLOYMENT
Adults with developmental disabilities eager to seek employment in the community are faced with numerous obstacles. It is imperative that these individuals have the resources and support readily available to assist them as they prepare, search and ultimately find community-based employment.
DAY-HABILITATIONSunshine's day-habilitation program provides an environment conducive to a variety of specific personal goals. Clients have the opportunity to participate in multiple activities in three areas: a ceramics shop, the greenhouse, or the enrichment center. Day-Habilitation provides services to assist in acquisition, retention, and/or improvement in adaptive skills necessary for continued community living. Primarily these services are to facilitate an individual's participation in age-appropriate community activities and use of typical community services. Clients also participate in group activities that provide structured day services designed to improve skills such as attending to tasks, purposeful manipulation of objects, using leisure time appropriately, and self-help skills. Sunshine's Staff works with our clients using a horticulture model, a ceramics project, a non-traditional learning center and an Occupational Therapist enabling them to master additional skills such as decision-making, punctuality, problem solving, following multiple instructions, and working individually on a project or in groups. Sunshine is proud to partner with the Galveston Brain Injury Association in our ceramics shop creating beautiful original pieces and of the community support we receive from our specialty herbs, a delicious byproduct of our horticulture therapy model. Our clients are very eager to learn and are equally proud of their individual progress. Additionally, Sunshine Center is linked to the University of Texas Medical Branch's Occupational Therapy and Psychology Program through its Partnerships for Healthy Communities Program. Sunshine's clients are able to receive the benefits of individual and group occupational therapy and psychology services on site while providing training for UTMB students and interns.
