NC Sunset Beach 5K Road Race

* The two people who put on this race are retiring from organizing this race.

So they would love to hand over the reins to a worthy team or one really organized person or anyone who is breathing.

The steps to get this race running are:

Fill out the Town of Sunset Beach permit request by Feb 11, 2020. Link right below. Include a check for a police detail and EMT detail and the fee for the permit. All are very reasonable fees. The usual date is the first Thursday of August.

2. Wait for the reply from the Town of SSB. If you do not hear back by April 11, 2020, call them and see if they need more information. They are sweet-hearts there. Once you get approval, please contact Bill Gallagher at Bill.Gall3@gmail.com and have him update this website with a new date and any other web changes.

3. Advertise this race; social media, SSB Properties real estate Facebook account and any other Facebook accounts on SSB and surrounding areas. No signs are allowed on the beach.

4. Make a sign just for race day to show people that we are having a race on this day. Please check out the sign in the pictures below.

5. Measure out the turn around mark the day before and leave some drift wood in the dunes. It is up to you if you want to have a water spot at the turn around spot or any where on the route.

6. Become friends with the Beach Patrol, because if you have a water spot at the turn around, they could be critical in getting all the water,table, cups, etc. out to the water spot.

7. Make the race as little impact on the beach. NO plastic bottles, No waxed covered cups, leave no trace.

8. Get a singer to sing the National Anthem, someone who can project.

9. Talk to area vendors and get 6 free prizes for the fastest three men and three women. If you bring your adorable daughter or son along and have them do the sales pitch, you will have a higher success rate.

10. Email Eddie Walters eddie@sunsetproperties.travel who is the man in charge at Sunset Beach Properties and ask him if he would love to continue to be the title/platinum/ultimate sponsor for the SSB 5K. Ask him also if he can mention the race on their Facebook page and Calendar. By being the platinum sponsor see if he can donate 250 SSB Properties lib palms, which are the greatest things. Email him in early April, so he has time to order some. He is a wonderful guy.

These steps seem like a lot but 90% can be done with email. Some of these steps above are optional.

Distance: a measured 5K out and back.

We are in need of a bull horn for the race, if anyone can lend us one for a few hours that day.

Remember when running in the heat you need to be aware of your body.

Stop when you are not feeling well, especially anyone under 18 years old.

Drink plenty of water or Gatorade before, during and after your run.

And if you are 15 yrs old or younger, your parents or

grandparents are responsible for you.

Do not push yourself during this race so you become sick.

This is a free race on a public beach for all to attend.

Runners and walkers are welcome. There will be prizes for all participants. may be.

NO medical tent,
NO restrictions on baby strollers,
NO restrictions on what you can wear or not wear,
NO free food at the end and
NO sign up process.
JUST a great fun race you can run with your whole family.

It will be just a great free race.

In 2010 we had 28 runners show up, 2011 we had over 75 runners show up and in 2012 we had 133 awesome runners. 2013 - we had over 250 runners, 2014 we had ~350 runners and in 2015 we had around 265 runners and 2016 we had 260 runners.

In 2017 we have around 275 runners. In 2018 we had around 290 runners.

There will be prizes for the top three runners for males and females. We are not sure what those prizes will be but they will be well worth it.There will also be a race official keeping precise timing on his watch for the top 3 runners in each gender. There will also be a start and finish line (drawn in the sand by our feet) and a big maker to show the turn around spot on the beach. You will also be getting lots of positive yelling and screaming from the race officials and relatives, vacationers and others along the way.

So actually, you will be getting many things at this race.

So, please join us before 10am for this wonderful free run. Race starts at 10:00am sharp.

SSB police and EMTs and the wonderful and very helpful beach patrol crew will be present.

Race Report for 2017

Another great year at the Sunset Beach 5K. We want to thank Mike P. for doing the whole race. Bill was not able to come down this year. We had 125 runners, which is a little lower than normal but we can blame the weather and high tide for part of that attendance. Mike's smart item of passing out leis to everyone was brilliant. We also want to thank the reliable and very helpful beach patrol and the Town of SSB for giving us permission to host this free and wonderful race on the pristine beach.

We also want to thank Sunset Beach Properties for their yearly donation of all the lip balm, they are very generous.

Race Report for 2015

Everyone had a great time for the wonderful FREE run. Everyone loved the water supplied by Sunset Properties which was passed out at the start/finish line and at the turn around stop. If you have pictures or videos from the race, please email them to us and we will load them up on our site. From all the feedback Mike and I received from all the runners we talked to loved everyone loved the race, the beach and the weather. (we apologize for any misspelled names below). We received the feedback that starting earlier was better for everyone. We also found out that people were looking forward to the lip balm, which may come back next year.

We had plenty of water at the start and finish and and had some left over.

We had some great help this year from Coastal Race Productions with letting us borrow their tables and air horn.

We apologize for the mis-calculated route, it was 3.87 miles.

Some winners did not accept the awards, which were a t-shirt, cup or $5 gift certificate to Sunset Slush.

Race Report from 2013:

250 + runners from many states ran this free race on Aug 8, 2013.

Everyone had a great time. We gave out Sunset Properties lip balm and window decals to every runner.

We also handed out 195 $1 coupons for sno-balls from Sunset Beach Trading Company.

We also gave out water at the turn around spot and at the end.

We want to thank all our runners and dedicated volunteers.

The top male and female finisher received a $15 gift certificate from the Sunset Beach Trading Company. The next two fastest women received a $10 gift certificate to Island Breeze Store. The second fastest male received a great t-shirt from AO Surf Store on Sunset Beach. And the third fastest male received a gift certificate to the cool, fun, fancy, well staffed coffee store Maverick's Java on the other side of the bridge.
