Basic info about viruses :

  • A computer virus will pass from one computer to another like a real life biological virus passes from person to person.

  • There are tens of thousands of viruses out there, and new ones are discovered every day.

  • Viruses may affect :

* Boot Sector

*The Network/LAN

* Online performance





Effects of computer viruses :

  • Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk.
  • Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply replicate themselves and make their presence known by presenting text, video, or audio messages.
  • Even these benign viruses can create problems for the computer user. They typically take up memory used by legitimate programs.
  • As a result, they often cause erratic behavior and can result in system crashes.





Preventive Measures :

  • Run a more secure operating system like UNIX.
  • Buy an anti virus software (Some popular software are listed below).
  • Avoid software from unknown sources and stick to commercial software.
  • Disable floppy disk booting.
  • Make sure Macro Virus Protection is enabled in all Microsoft applications.
  • Use Firefox which is any day less prone to virus attacks.
