A computer virus will pass from one computer to another like a real life biological virus passes from person to person.

There are tens of thousands of viruses out there, and new ones are discovered every day.

Effects of computer viruses :
- Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk.
- Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply replicate themselves and make their presence known by presenting text, video, or audio messages.
- Even these benign viruses can create problems for the computer user. They typically take up memory used by legitimate programs.
- As a result, they often cause erratic behavior and can result in system crashes.
Preventive Measures :
- Run a more secure operating system like UNIX.
- Buy an anti virus software (Some popular software are listed below).
- Avoid software from unknown sources and stick to commercial software.
- Disable floppy disk booting.
- Make sure Macro Virus Protection is enabled in all Microsoft applications.
- Use Firefox which is any day less prone to virus attacks.
