Agitator woes

 GE agitator

Proper agitation of the clothes is vital in top loading washing machines. If the agitator is not working right then the clothes will not get clean as they could be. So I thought I would mention a few common agitator problems.
Here goes:

With GE models the older ones have what you call a spline block

   GE Spline

mounted inside the agitator. These splines will strip out causing the agitator to come off of the transmission. Sometimes the agitator will come off this spline but it will not come off the transmission without being chistled off. I try to glue the agitator back to that block with rubber cement but sadly the spline must come off most of the time.  No need to buy another agitator. Simply replace the spline. First fish out the remaining rubber of the old spline and glue the new spline block back in using pressure to push it back up into the agitator taking care not to break the agitator. For this I have a large  thick heavy metal circus tent pole spike.Works well.I get the glue on and line up the block, I then set the agitator upside down on a soft carpet and using my body weight I press in the new spline block. Two people can get a 2x4 and apply equal pressure also.  On newer model GE washers the agitator has a fat spline

bolted to the tranny at the base of the tub. To get to it you must yank out the agitator. Grab it by the neck and give it a good pull and it comes right off. Grabbing it by the base only makes it tighter and keeps it in place.

On kenmore/whirlpool models they use a 2 piece agitator with a set of 4 dogs

  Agitator dogs

inside it. As the washer rotates back and forth, the dogs grab the inner walls of the upper agitator and that forces the clothes into a downward movement to the bottom of the tub. These dogs will wear out. To test whether or not these are bad just grab the agitator while in wash mode. The dogs should advance the top portion easily. If not then they are worn out. To replace them you must remove the agitator and sit it on the floor. Hold the base down with your feet and yank the top upwards. After seperating the 2 pieces you simply install the new dogs and line up the bottom with the top being careful not to break the little tabs on the bottom agitator that hold the top in place.

Maytag washer agitators simply cannot be rebuilt but parts of them can be replaced as with frigidaire. These very rarely need replacement.
