Recommendations

I know I’m always on the prowl for a good fic, so hopefully this list can help you find some. Here’s a list of some of my favorite authors. If they have a stand-out story, I’ve placed it after their name; otherwise I’ve just put their names. Most of these stories can be found on ff.net.

Sailor Moon:

Alicia Blade: all. Duh. She’s like a Greek goddess of the Sailor Moon fic world. Even though Royal Flush is incredibly sappy, I reread it at least once a year. And The House on Thornrose Lane is amazing despite – sob! – the ending. Correction: it is amazing largely BECAUSE of the ending. I love it so much!!!

Arashinobara Jikkankakyoku: Kakera ni Tsukiakari. (Warning: incomplete. Normally I wouldn't recommend an incomplete fic, but this is one you should read anyway.)

Cherazor: The Puppet Show

Chibicori: all. But especially You Killed Santa Claus.

Crystal Heart: Masquerade. Some fics just give you precious images that embed themselves in your memory like jewels for eternity, and this is one of them.

Draegyn: Guardians of Selene series. Her tough-man Darien made me want to write a Darien who wasn’t a soppy wimp in an ugly jacket.

Firespirit1’s It’s Gonna Be Me: I didn’t care about non-Dare/Sere romances until I read this fic. It convinced me that Rei and Jadeite were meant to be.

Isis, also known as isiscw: She wrote For Argument’s Sake, which, in terms of Sere and Dare’s relationship, may have been the biggest basis for STC. Everything I learned about romance, I learned from For Argument’s Sake. It’s one of those fics that I think about very frequently even when it's been years since I read it.

Jennifer Wand: another duh. She’s a classic. All SM fans should read her.

Lilac Summers: Heart-wrenching, hilarious, romantic, in-character, AND beautiful imagery? Read everything she’s written. But especially First Truths.

MelsT: On the Edge of Lurve. Hilarious.

Nat-chan: I can’t even count how many times I stayed up till three in the morning giggling at her stories. They’re amazing. I collect them like holographic Pokemon cards.

Princess Destiny: Spin the Bottle, Senshi Wars, True Sight, most of her others. They’re funny, they’re sexy, they make you want to write Sailor Moon fanfiction. Yes, Mamoru IS a bit of a jerk, but…a mostly irresistible one. (Warning: check the fic ratings before you read to make sure you’re prepared).

Sean Wright: Untitled and the Consequences saga. These stories were HUGE influences on STC, especially in the rewriting of canon and Luna and Pluto’s characters. Also, where else would you find a pairing between Michiru and Motoki? AWESOME!

Serenity-hime: The Longest Trip Ever, Acting Out. DE-lightful! Another of those fics which gives you unforgettable images (Usagi playing DDR in front of fanboys)!

Silent Serenade: As the Eagle Flies. AU, with Serenity and Endymion. One of the most thought-out and intelligent SM fics I've ever read. Her other works are also intensely in-character.

Stormlight: another classic SM writer whose stories should not be missed.

Bleach: Ichiruki. No Ichihime here, no sir.

Alaena Night: Simple Toys for Simple Minds
Enchantable: If you're an Ulqiorra/Orihime fan. Her Ichiruki stuff's not as good.

GalaxiaAlpha

Hikari Yuuko: Death Butterflies

Kilonji

NessieGG
peroxidepest

Rukiahana: Pocketful of Miracles, 15 Minutes of Reality. These are my favorite Bleach fics, hands down.

Ryuutsu Seishin Hime no Argh

Naruto:

Bullwinkle's Lady: SasukeHinata. Very funny Naruto and Sasuke interaction
Digifruit
Enchantable: if you like KushinaMinato!
Egalaya: SasukeHinata
Folle: amazing NaruSaku oneshots, and a series: Shibboleth
Leanne Ashley: Little Piece of Heaven (SasuSaku, but good nonetheless)
Lisse: amazing oneshots. They really make you think. got a boy in the war is possibly the most incredible thing I've ever read.
Luc Court
michelle-18: Grains of Sand (GaaraHinata, hilarious and heart warming Sai, Naruto, and Gaara interactions)
Queen-of-Masbolle: KushinaMinato
Quill of Molliemon: AMAZING and LONG stories. KushinaMinator as main pairing, but interesting for anyone.
Ravyn: She has a Narusaku story and a Sasusaku one, neither of whose names I can remember. Both are kick-ass.
twisted-sheets: KushinaMinato. Adorable and awesome.
Winter Weatherman: SasukeHinata. VERY intense story.

CCS: SyaoSaku. Hanyaaaaaan!

Kay-Juli: Power of Two Hearts, Kokoro no Hon

The Mouse: Dimensions

Wish-chan: SHE IS THE BEST FIC AUTHOR IN THE UNIVERSE. READ her fic The New Trials of Cardcaptor Sakura or you will be living an incomplete life. I'm serious.

Inuyasha:

Arisu-the-pink: Stress Relief

Becky Tailweaver: The White Dog

Eien-no-basho: Behind the Silk Screen

Reenas-as: She also writes Vampire Knight fics.

Sueric

Skip Beat!: a sadly slim selection. Write Skip Beat! stories, people!

J Luc Pitard

Golden Meliades
momoirusagichan

Twilight: Alas, the few that exist aren’t extremely appealing.

Saiyachick: Love in Affliction

Eowyn77

Harry Potter: if you’re Harry/Ginny fans, which everyone should be. ^-^

Cwarbeck: all. Hilarious.
Ellyse
Fionnabhair
Hwimsey
iluvfanfics: beware the ratings! Need is really really good.
Melindaleo: all, but beware, they’re extremely sappy and tend to emasculate Harry.
Nuw255: A Past Reclaimed
Poseida
rant: especially We Had to Start Somewhere
St Margarets: all. Simply adorable.
Strider: I Need a Hero (Normally I don't read HP fics that involve vampires, but this one is so kick-ass without getting at all cheesy. It's incredibly well-done.)
Tosca: Exposure and its sequel. Starts out intriguing, gets weird.
Zsenya and Araballea: After the End. This fic comes closer to emulating Rowling’s style and characterization than anything else I’ve ever read. ANYTHING. Read it.

Star Wars: I don’t know if anyone else is into this, but if you’re a Mara Jade fan…

Deja Know I’ve Been Looking for Vu

Gabri-Jade

Jedi Amoira: New Beginnings

Obaona

Actual Books by Actual Authors:
Edward Bloor: Tangerine and Crusader. Bloor is the MASTER of understated teenage angst.

Sarah Rees Brennan: Demon's Lexicon, full of kick-ass witty one-liners and one of the hottest guys and most heartwarming, heart-rending brother relationships I've ever read. If Sapphire was a real person, and that real person was actor, I would want him to play the protagonist of this book.

Sarah Dessen: everything but especially Along for the Ride and The Truth About Forever

Clare Dunkle: The Hollow Kingdom

Julia Golding: Dragonfly involves an arranged marriage between two people who despise each other and is unbearably wonderful. Set in a fantasy universe, it addresses religious and ecological conflicts as well as the romance.

Eva Ibbotson: all her stuff but especially Countess Under the Stairs

Maureen Johnson: read ALL her books. They involve high school girls getting into high school situations (family drama, cute guys, friendships problems, etc.). VERY witty and fresh with some manga and fanfic references sprinkled throughout.

Melina Marchetta: Finnikin of the Rock is hands-down one of the best books I have ever read. Involves a kingdom cut off by magic, a kick-ass priestess who's more than she seems to be, and a hero with an attitude and a back-bone. And romance, of course. Beautiful, angsty, more-difficult-than-it-needs-to-be romance, which is the best kind. Marchetta's other books like Jellicoe Road and Finding Francesca are also amazing.

Eloise Jarvis McGraw: Mara, Daughter of the Nile

Caragh O'Brien: Birthmarked

Meredith Anne Pierce: A Gathering of Gargoyles, which is part of the Darkangel trilogy. A very unique mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, which I know doesn't sound impressive but really is.

Rick Riordan: The Lightning Thief series. Follows a pre-teen (and later teen) boy who finds out his father was Poseidon. SO much better than it sounds. Feels a bit Harry Potter-esque in the friendships and brave hero-who-doesn't-want-to-be-but-has-to, which is why it's awesome.

J.K. Rowling: I think this one explains itself. If it doesn't, suffice it to say that I will listen to and participate in criticism about ANY book, but try to convince me that there is even so much as an unclear pronoun in Rowling's work, and I will jump down your throat. On a Hungarian Horntail.

Megan Whalen Turner: The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, etc. The intelligence and subtlety of these books astounds me. The protagonist, the thief (Eugenides) is hot in a capable, subtle (again) sort of way that makes me wish I could write Numa like him.

Timothy Zahn: If you like Star Wars, he's written books continuing after the end of Return of the Jedi. Why should you read it? Two words: Mara Jade.
