Gestalt Concept: The Whole is Greater the Individual Parts
As we go through our daily lives, once of the most important things we can do for ourselves is maintain a sense of balance.
Having balance implies having “wholeness,” for if we are not “whole,” we cannot have balance. Just imagine trying to balance on a chair with once of its legs missing!
Although we have many aspects that make up who we are consciously, there are four basic elements to our “Being” that we need to live a full life. They are our:
When we achieve balance in our lives, we start to experience some serenity and contentedness that leads to fulfillment. In a sense, we are like a “tire” that is properly inflated and “road-worthy.”
Too often though (and for a variety of different reasons), we get out of balance quite a bit. This causes problems in our day to day lives and can often lead to feelings of lack of fulfillment, discontent, or even more serious problems in our life. Not only do parts of our tire develop bulges and flat spots, but we also lack connectedness with our Self and others. Imagine driving on a tire that looks like this!
In many cases, the part of our Being that gets “whack” is our spiritual side. No, I am not talking religion here. I am talking about a sense of being part of something bigger than yourself—some higher purpose, if you will. If you feel like you have tried “everything” and still can’t seem to find peace in your life, often the place to look is at your spirit.
And when one part of our life gets neglected, other areas seem to get more attention—and unfortunately it is not in a healthy form. For example, if we are neglecting our emotions, we may compensate by eating too much, turning to addictive or mind altering substances, or by developing distorted thinking patterns.
In my practice, I help people explore their own spirituality and their own beliefs. Please know I am not a religious counselor and am not qualified to help you in terms of theology and guidance from a particular perspective. What I can do is help you discover for yourself what works for you.
However, I am always on the look out for various tools you can use independently to help address various life concerns. The following are some useful spiritual tools that can help. If some sound good to use, great. If they are not for you, well, as they say “take what you want and leave the rest.” I am always on the lookout for more material so check this page often for additions or updates.
If you are feeling life is “out of balance for you,” coaching or counseling can help you work through whatever obstacles are keeping you from being your best Self. I would be happy to discuss these matters with you more to help you determine if our combined efforts could yield growth on your life’s path.
