(5000 waterproof, color-changing Xilver™ RainDrop™ RGB LED fixtures were used provide this unique exterior, which is completely encapsulated in 80 cm-diameter frosted glass discs, each backlit by these fixtures.....
This matrix of colour-changing light sources enables the creation of a vivid play of colors and graphics across the store's exterior. Controlled over DMX-512 from a custom hardware and software control system, the network handles 32 lines with a total of some 15,000 DMX channels. Each Xilver™ RainDrop™ RGB LED fixture acts as an individual RGB video screen pixel, allowing the entire building to be covered with still or moving videos and bitmaps complete with additional Effects.)

저는 "the network handles 32 lines with a total of some 15,000 DMX channels" <- 요 부분이 아직 잘 이해가 안 갑니다.
32 lines 가 뭘 의미하는 걸까요

Uniqlo is an exception to the high end brands in Ginza - having built its brand providing basic clothing at reasonable prices. So in contrast to the sleekness of the other facades, our approach at Uniqlo Ginza was to go simple and basic. If facades are now screens, our Uniqlo facade is a pixilated "electro-retro" version. It is made up of a matrix of one thousand illuminated cells, whose luminosity can be individually controlled to produce chunky Tetris-style patterns on the facade. A mirror-finish stainless steel grid placed over this screen has the effect of breaking up and blurring off its sharp edges. The four-square Uniqlo logo shines through all, lit up with a bright LED array. Luxury, at low-res.

Haque Design + Research, <Sky Ear>, 2004.(LONDON)

Haque Design + Research

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) exist just about everywhere in our atmosphere. Urban locations in particular have a diverse and vibrant hertzian culture, with mobile phone calls overlapping text messages, combining television broadcasts with garage door openers that interfere with radio transmissions and wireless laptops, etc., not to mention the natural EMF that already exists in the atmosphere. This project is a spatial investigation of some of these phenomena.

Sky Ear is a non-rigid carbon-fibre "cloud", embedded with one thousand glowing helium balloons and several dozen mobile phones. The balloons contain miniature sensor circuits that respond to electromagnetic fields, particularly those of mobile phones. When activated, the sensor circuits co-ordinate to cause ultra-bright coloured LEDs to illuminate. The 30m cloud glows and flickers brightly as it floats across the sky.

lights on, <audio visual performance>, 2009.(Linz, Austria)
lights on is an audio visual performance created for the Ars Electronica museum in Linz, Austria, which has a facade that contains 1085 LED controllable windows. The windows' colors are changed in realtime with music that's broadcasted on speakers surrounding the building.

visuals coded in openframeworks by zachary lieberman, joel gethin lewis and damian stewart (yesyesno). music by daito manabe, with support from Taeji Sawai and Kyoko Koyama. we made this in three days :)

the performance is approximately 10 minutes long. this is an edit. also, we've recorded the output from the software (audio / OSC) and this performance can be replayed in the future for events, etc.

special thanks to the awesome ars electronica / futurelab crew, (maria, wolfgang, andreas, ramsay, horst, gerfried, maff, christopher and everyone else), also iris mayer, carolina vallejo, and rhizomatiks for helping make this possible. also a huge thanks to the excellent technicians Multivision

<LOLITA>, 2004. (JFK New York airport).
Arad designed the two Chandeliers around an ideal – making our messages and doodles worthy of lingering on for a while until we decide to change them.
Lolita is a classic chandelier shape that consists of
2100 Swarovski crystals forming in an omni directional spiral. Each crystal has an embedded LED that acts as a pixel, enabling the crystals to display texts sent to it via mobile phone.
Miss Haze works in a similar way, this time reacting to a palm pilot: the suspended crystals form a landscape onto which one can draw both in positive – switching on a free hand line of crystals, and in negative – switching off a line of crystals while the rest remain on.

Voyage, currently installed in JFK New York airport, is constructed of a 15-foot high double-loop metal framework embellished with 52,000 Swarovski crystals and 2000 motion-sensitive LEDs programmed to light up as travelers pass by. The effect is one of uninterrupted movement, inspired by water and continuous human passage through the world....

Kiefer Technik Showroom, Graz

In a city where good architecture is practically de rigueur, Graz still manages to surprise and inspire with the strength and sheer variety of its built environment. In fact, the city’s stable of progressive architects seems intent that it should not simply rest on its laurels as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Leading the charge is architectural outfit Ernst Giselbrecht + Partner.

Since founding the firm in 1985, principal Ernst Giselbrecht has parlayed his passion for light – filtered and mechanically controlled light to be precise – into a series of bold and generously lit public buildings. Thanks to his training as both architect and mechanical engineer, the Giselbrecht oeuvre is extensive, covering everything from clinics, railway stations and schools to research facilities and university extensions.

His most recent work for Kiefer Technic is a high water mark for these ideals. A manufacturer of doors and equipment for hospital operation theatres and stainless steel furniture, Kiefer asked for an airy showroom – overlooking a park – that showed off the firm’s products to best effect. Giselbrecht’s solution was to clad the entire southern end of the showroom with a wall of white aluminium louvre panels that open and shut using an array of electronically-controlled horizontal hinges.

The result is a building whose facade gracefully morphs in a series of concertina folds depending on the light requirements and warmth tolerance of those inside. The system can be programmed to display countless patterns and configurations, giving what could have been a humdrum office a fascinating animated facade.

Touch (Dexia

FLARE
kinetic ambient reflection membrane

FLARE is a pneumatic building facade system. The FLARE system consists of a number of tiltable metal flake bodies. An infinite array of flakes can be mounted on any building or wall surface in a modular system of multiplied 4x4 FLARE units. Each metal flake reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical standby position.
When the flake is tilted downwards by a computer controlled pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light and this way appears as a dark pixel. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight the individual flakes of the FLARE system act like pixels formed by natural light. The system is controlled by a computer to form any kind of surface animation. Sensor systems inside and outside the building communicate the buildings activity directly to the FLARE system which acts as the buildings lateral line. FLARE turns the building facade into a penetrable membrane, breaking with all conventions of the building surface as a static skin.

Aegis Hyposurface decoi

digi1gn.jpg

PICT00351.JPG

The Aegis Hyposurface is an outstanding piece of technics. It was designed by deCOi Architects and recieved the Feidad (= Far Eastern International Digital Architectural Design) Award 2001. It is still a remarkable design approach. The idea behind is, that due to the different positions of the small metall tiles, the reflection of the surrounding light is changing. In this way a tremendous poetic way of displaying patterns and shapes is possible. The Prototype consists out of about 1000 of these metall tiles. They are moved by “telescopic fingers” which reach a speed up to 60 km/h and have a stroke of 50 cm. Look at the following movies:Hyposurface01.AVI Hyposurface02.AVI

resonet

Designed by Mark Francis Tynan & William Hailiang Chen, ResoNet visualises the resonant frequencies inherent in the natural environment, via the interaction of the public and surrounding elements detected by a LED net. By using Low-Fi techniques ResoNet creates a cascade of light triggered by the vibrations detected across the structure.

Dune 4.1_MaastunnelDune 4.1_Maastunnel

The installation spans 40 metres and consists of hundreds of fibres which react to the movements and sounds made by the visitors. When humans are present, the landscape physically changes its appearance, based on the recorded data. The data is collected using embedded microphones and presence sensors, and causes the fibres to light up, accordingly.

audience.jpg

Audience, conceived by rAndom International, is an installation consisting of around 64 head-size mirror objects. Each object moves its head in a particular way to give it different characteristics of human behaviour. Some chat amongst themselves, some shy away and others confidently move to grab your attention.

One hundred identical sculptural elements, arranged in ten by ten grid, are rotated at slightly differing speeds by computer-controlled motors. The elements slowly shift in and out of synchronization. When the motors are just out of sync, huge waves ripple across the space. When completely in sync, the work appears almost solid then suddenly almost invisible.

저는 "the network handles 32 lines with a total of some 15,000 DMX channels" <- 요 부분이 아직 잘 이해가 안 갑니다.
