Ways to Stay Connected

Here are some of the tools we've been using to collaborate and hold meetings remotely:

  1. Second Life: If everyone is in a different location, this is great for getting everyone in the same place.  Integrated voice chat makes talking easy.  Some meeting rooms can even record your meeting or allow you to show powerpoint.  We like the Crowne Plaza Hotel Executive Meeting Room.
  2. Skype: Skype now provides a free phone conferencing service.  Very useful for meetings, especially if some members are colocated while others are remote.  There are also some Skype Collaboration tools (3rd party) listed here.
  3. MSN
  4. Gmail/GTalk: Over 4gbs of space lets you send large files easily.  Less spam too.  GTalk provides a good way to create records of your conversations that are easily searchable.
  5. Google Docs: Google Docs is a great way to share documents and collaborate on them.
  6. Google Sites: We've used it for this site - enough said!
  7. Adobe ConnectNow Web Conferencing Software - You only need a flash player and no special downloads, and is free!  Supports screen sharing, web cams/voice, white board, and more.  The down side (yes, there had to be one) is that it only allows 3 attendees in the free version.
  8. DimDim: This is an especially useful web conferencing tool.  It's free and allows up to 20 attendees.  You can also share screens, use web cams and voice chat, white board, and share slides.  Very nice!
