I Don't Have a Group - Where do I Start?

Here are some ideas to get you started, including how you can get support, where to find sponsors, and how to recruit new members.

Where Can I Get Support For My Group?

You can start by approaching your department, especially if there is someone working on recruitment.  ~Kate
You can also start an ACM-W chapter in your school. Take a look at the requirements to start your own group here. IEEE has a similar initiative called WIE - Women in Engineering, and you can start a WIE affinity group at your school, if you find that there is more interest in IEEE than ACM. Details about the affinity groups can be found here. ~Sunayana

Who Should I Ask For Sponsorships?

If you are organized, you can ask anyone.  In my experience, having advertising materials about your group and a letter requesting donations for a specific event helps a lot.  WICS has had donations from grocery stores, restaurants, our campus computer store, bakeries, and more.  We look for industry sponsors for tours and other prizes.  Keep an open mind and remember: the more places you ask, the more chance you have of getting support! ~Kate

We've found that food joints are quite happy to give away discount coupons and students are very happy to receive them! ~Sunayana

How Can I Attract New Members?

There are (or will be) lots of recruitment ideas on our 'I have a Group, Now What?' page.  Keep checking back as we update the site.
